I am looking for further clarifacation on the BBY "lobster" sport 40 and if it is legal for sport 40. I have found conflicting ideas and answers and would just like to know for sure. I purchased one recently and love the boat. Unfortunatly Canada post is taking their sweet time getting it to my door  But I have read the rules and from the specs given for this hull it should be legal. Is there anyone else that runs this hull in sport 40???

I have some questions.

1) Are there any rear sponsons?

2) what is the total length of the hull?

3) what is the total of the pickle fork length combined with any vent length?

4) Is the transom over 5.5" wide?

a)If it has rear sponsons it is not legal.

b)if the total vented area, that is the pickle fork plus any vents is over 25% of the over all length then it is not legal.

c) if the transom is not 5.5" or wider it is not legal.

d) it must be at least 35" long.

I would sure like to see a drawing of one of these that showed the overall length ,pickle fork length and length of any venting.

If someone would make these measurements and post or email me I would apreciate it.

Thanks,

This hull is not legal in IMPBA. :(

Thanks fo rgetting back to me so quick.

1) no rear sponsons

and as soon as I have it in my hands as I don't want to post specs and then find out the built unit is diferent. I should have it in a day or two and will post pic's and measure everything on this boat. The website to BBY states it's built to NAMBA sport 40 specs

This is a quote from thier website www.bbyracing.com

The War Eagle's design comes from the full size 1989 Winston Eagle. Steve Newton's 1/8 scale plans were used as a starting point, then scaled down to the different classes. Two years of testing the Sport 40 II and making necessary changes were made to the bottom of the hull to make it one of the lightest with the smallest envelope possible. Not only is this hull faster than the rest, every care was taken to make it legal in all NAMBA racing. The sponsons are a foam core design that can be removed for replacement in case of accident, plus the inclination angle can be fine tuned.

It looks like they've flared the tub out wider as it leaves the main canards. Hopefully that gets it to the 5 1/2" transom width you need for NAMBA.

Here is the info I got from Randy Naylor

"a.. how wide is the transom ? 5 5/8 inches

b.. are there any rear sponsons? No

c.. how long is the boat? 35 1/4

d.. how long is the pickle fork? 7 7/8 this is A + B in the rules

e.. how long is the venting if any? none

If there is any thing else you need let me know.

Randy

BBY"

There are a couple of other things that may apply but from these specs it looks NAMBA legal to me.

Where I'm at in Mich it's a "RIGGER" as the rear is less than half the sponson width.Of course we don't run by any rules either Heh Heh Heh

:D that was what I had recived from the seller as the specs he measured before I purchased. Now what else should I be looking for to make sure this is a legal NAMBA 40 hull??

Make sure the prop is no more than one standard drivedog length behind the transom.

:D So after a shipping fiasco I recived my BBY SP40. Overall I am very pleased with it. The builder''s idea of hardware left me gaging but the hull is sound and I have requested a hardware kit from BBY to put it back together. The Spec's on this hull are as Eric stated and I am happy as I found a painter to do her up this the Winston Eagle. Here's the funny thing, As I was browsing the BBY site guess what I found???? Four pic's of this boats and the name of the origonal owner. It was nice to see that this hull has exchanged hands and that it was taken care of due to no signs of any damage. So after a new paint job and the right hardware I'll be out racing. Here are some pic's before and how it will look after.View attachment 3563

Mike raced the boat a couple of times at Legg Lake this past year. Once being the NAMBA Nats. It didnt appear that he had spent a lot of time with the boat. Maybe that was why he sold it. In the short time that I saw his boat, it looked like it had possibilities.

I think with some time put into the boat to fine tune its running, you will be very happy with it.

I can't say who set up the hardware as there was more than one hole for each of the rear bolts for strut and rudder. Also someone epoxied the front sponsons at one hell of a bad angle which would tell me this thing would be real front end light and could blow over if you farted. I have totally torn it down and requested a build sheet and hardware from BBY. I will redo it over the winter and set it up as per build sheet to start. Either way Ihave always liked the looks of this boat so win or lose a bad days racing is always better than a good days work.
