Hi all-

As I posted in my last message I am new to this sport so I am looking for some advise. I just have two quick questions:

1. What do you think I should run in a Carbon Fiber Oval Master 29 from BBY (Major Parts: motor, esc, prop, battery cells, etc...) Remember I am a beginner at fast electric boats, so I DO WANT something to go real fast, but not out of hand for my first motor. What is everyone running in the CF OM29 or regular OM29?

2. Does anyone have pictures of their CarbonFiber Oval Master 29 or a regular OM29 all painted and pics of their setup?

Thanks everyone.

Hi Paul,

I don't know of anyone that races a OM 29, not that someone doesn't but I haven't seen one. What are you looking for in a boat? If I have a better idea of what the goal is I could give you some suggestions.

Paul.

To add to what Paul is asking....would you want an offshore type set up...fast for 4mins? A sprint setup? a sport/recreatonal type setup? I assume the OM is 29" length. That would be a 12 to 18 cell hull setup IMO.

I really appreciate the quick responses, this board is great!

To answer both of your questions I am not looking to race, but on the same note I do want to go fast and have fun in a fairly windy area (so some chop). I would like the boat to handle well and rip up the water, but not get out of control because like I said I'm new to this sport. I'm just looking to have some fun, jump some waves if possible and go fast at my local pond...Heather Farms in Concord, CA. Also, I want a good sound out of the boat, I love the way that NITRO's sound, but there isn't anywhere close that allows Nitro, so I want to go with a fast electric.

And to answer your question Alan, 29 is the length (29").

Any advise you have for me would be great.

Thanks again.

check out RR where you posted this also

there has been some info posted for you on that site also.

For recreational use and to keep the cost down...try a hacker B50 14 to 15 L and 12 cells(or nemisis equivelant) with x442 prop. Use a 70 amp min speedo. Hardware....alot of it is good just depends on your taste....but speedmaster rudders rock. The above setup will get you 4 mins of runtime.

For fun and dependability I would suggest a 700 size motor, rchydros esc and 14 to 16 cells.

The boat will run 25-35 depending on how well you set it up. It will also be as bullet proof as

any rc product could be.

Or follow Alan's suggestion for more speed and more run time.

Id be going the 8Xl - 10XL rather than the L range if you decide to go BL

Just more a 12 cell motor than the L. Can take more heat and a good hammering. THe L 14 or 15 would be OK i guess, but i would invest in a XL series.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

How long do you think the boat will run on 14-16cells? How can I get the boat to run for a longer period of time or is this even possible?

The easy answer is to use a pack with a higher capacity.....but that risks excessive temperatures. Water cooling the BL motor (preferably the XL size for more mass) and the ESC is probably mandatory. 4200 NiMH cells, or high capacity LiPos up to 10,000 mAh are the way to get big run time increases, but watch for heat build-up!

the unbustable run long time motor is the 700 - the SS1 SC or NeoX - on 16 cells with an X440-X442 you will have a setup you can run all day, on 12 cells 34 is not unexpected and on 16 cells you should be heading toward 40 - thats the cheapest setup you can get and a great one to learn about fastelectrics.

If you want a brushless for 12 cells pick somethign witha rpm/v figure of a 1900-2000 rpm/v with mass in the range of 220gm - 300gm ie Neu 1512/Hacker B50L to Neu 1515/B50XL. Use X400 series Octuras from X438 up and run on low timing.

This will get you longer runtimes - upward of 6+ minutes - with high efficeincy.

Thanks guys. That helps a lot.

Andrewg could I also run that 700 setup in the Oval Master 26"?

Yes offroad.

There are alot of diff setyups you can run in these hulls. For sprint speed go 25m or higher rpm(cellsxKv) for sport run around 20m rpm.

I would stay B/L IMO. The 700's are cheap and good intro to electronics...but if you want speed.

As Jay was saying....Lipos are the future...still testing and working them out but yesterday I ran my N-2 offshore cat for 5minutes....very fast....faster than many n-2 sprint setups. The darned thing just went faster and faster. 7500mah 90 amp rated lipos(tanic) there just wasn't any slowing down. Took out 5000mah. Then 2 club guys ran their Q O/S setups with Lipos....they just had fun for over 4minutes without losing speed. Once we get a handle on these cells....all of us will be running longer and faster.

Ok for me it's down to a couple choices:

1. CEN Aquajet (Xtreme 700SC) RTR from offshoreelectrics.com

2. Oval Master 26" or 29"

I know the CEN is RTR, what do you guys think this boat needs besides what offshoreelectrics is upgrading it with: Jet-Navy ESC (watercooled) and watercooled Motor. Is the hull upgradeable and going to last? Can I buy the boat in another color?

Is the Oval Master a better boat overall, if I save money and build it myself?

Thanks for all the help.

OM is a race boat, the CEN is not.

both are good boats.

If you intend on racing in the future, OM is the boat to get.

Worth the time to put it together, plus there is satisfaction in completing your own boat.

keep it cheap and simple

OM 26 hull

neoX, ss1, 700BB motor - what ever one

12 cell 3300 or better

charger for 12 cells

hardware octura long strut bracket, strut and rudder.

carbon motor mount

own radio is up to you

12cell ESC - rc-hydros, astro flight, or really cheap pro boat blue.

prop m445 great sport boat, m447 is fast racing. Get them from offshore electrics and you will not be disapointed.

David

The 700 motor is a designated race class which is a lot of fun

With the BBY expect 34 mph on 12 cells. The motors are much of a muchness. Get the best cells you can afford and the best charger; these are the petrol tank and the combustion chamber they make the power and they make a big impact on performance.

16 cells in the BBY will take you to the tail end of a 3.5 mono race field - very impressive performance from $US150 motor controller setup.

I would like you to get a OM 29 CF instead.

you will be glad you avoided ABS.

an SS1 motor.

12 cells to start,

you will be wanting 16 cells soon after .

so buy a Triton charger.

so you can expand at a later date.

Thanks everyone for all the advise on the setup. I think I'm going to order a OM 26 or 29. What radio/servos is everyone running in these boats? I heard Futaba is a good brand, but expensive. I know the pistol style controllers are better...but what about channels, am I going to want a 3rd channel later on? AM or FM? I just wanted to know the basics of radios.

Has anyone heard how the owner of BBY Racing is doing? Is he back to work or still out?

Thanks.

I would respectfully disagree. A fiberglass or cf boat will crack and fracture in a crash.

ABS will have more "give", so its better as a first boat. They are lots of good abs boats

out there and Randy builds the majority of them.

2 channels is all you need for electric boats, but FM is a much better investment then a cheap AM radio. Hitec is probably the biggest bang for your buck as far as radio's go. Randy at BBY is back to work on a limited schedule, but can probably get you out ABS boats pretty quick. I would also agree with Pagemaster, ABS is a great way to start. I was racing an ABS boat I built 6 or 7 years ago right up until last year.
