Joerg's current record holder uses sophisticated aerodynamics for both stability and low drag. A rear wing combined with forward sponsons gives good longitudinal stability. Because it runs in ground effect, quick loss of lift as its height increases gives a stable distance above the water surface. For straight line speed the vertical fins provide directional stability even when the water rudder is partly lifted out of the water. Another demonstration of a rear wing' in combination with forward sponsons is in this video. As we have more power available, especially with electric power plants, these concepts will result in faster boats with good stability. It may even help high speed heat race riggers.

Joerg's boat has the double pivoting rudders; I don't know about the one in the video.

They brought a couple of those to Huntsville a couple of years ago and they are impressive for sure. One of them made a 163 mph pass. I have often wondered why most of the typical round track hydros that can be bought in kit form are still made with simple box type construction. I guess that the ease of construction drives a lot of the design with these boats. I have seen a few people lately that are building some really cool stuff using molded carbon fiber parts but mostly the basic wooden box-type tubs and sponsons are seen at races around here.

All of the Team JAG hydro's have air brakes built into the vertical stabilizers. All lot of attention to detail in their boats including profiling everything even the antenna tube. They designed their hulls for certain speed ranges and have made some small modifications over the years as the speeds increased due to power system increases. They are now at 200mph and will hopefully be challenging the real Miss Budweiser for the faster propeller driven hydro. I guess this excludes the twin offshore cat's which I believe hold the overall propeller driven speed records. A great bunch of guys to know.

when you isolate, or focus, your vision only on the fuselage portion of Joerg's current record holder, it consist's of a classic jet aircraft profile design (ie. B-1 bomber, F-18, or F-22, etc.,...). Aerodynamics are inherent in the design.

Hi Lohring,

stabiliser wings are a must at that speed spezial as they reduce ruder surface. I am currently testing counterrotating propeller drives with very reduced ruder and propeller pitch controll also to,reduce ruder to mostly eleminate drag.
Nice contest of paperplanes from Japan with the head of the groundeffect train profesor a double wing design that hes les change of center of lift . The windbody centerpart of outrigger change the center of lift very much belong to the wing deep and riding distance. , you will love it.

Hi Bryan,
i think nobody has posted the results of the last Munich SAW that was held end of September during Oktoberfest.
One of the best fighter is Johannes with his smaller 3 and 4 S rigger,
see his record run close for shut down sun.
Here ist the tread in the German forum with all the results and list of boats and equipment.
As we see the boys become faster and faster with less number of cells. Like Gunnar Hold , he is runing the JAGs team rigger that Jörg run with 8 cells , Gunnar runs the boat with 6 cell see his new record,
