For 21 pipes on outboards, I make mine from a pill bottle, brass tubing, and J.B. Kwick.

The end of the core is plugged with J.B. Kwick and the front of the core is slotted and held onto the stinger with a small hose clamp.

I like the idea of home made. JD has a neat unit and cheap. Seems back in the day guys used metal 35mm film cans. Now they don't exist. JD has my brain working now. Thanks everyone for the help.

that should double your resale value!!!!.. :) ..LOL

I have used the internal stingers.. for various reasons.. they do help but I don't feel that they quiet as much as a muffler.. They can also help with back pressure, getting more heat in the motor,. and I have thought sometimes thought they change the characteristics of some pipes.,. .

The only add on muffler that did any real quieting is the ones that the Coopers made. Unfortunately they quit make tuned pipes and mufflers so finding one may be difficult.

Here is a link to some,.. http://technologyhob...ries/index.html

to my they don't' make it much quieter but take away the harsh or shrill whine.. which is very good really.. I've only had them on .21's
Guys,

If you do not have a noise/DB meter and rely upon your hearing you are not getting it accurate. I can hear a boat running and can get within 2 db's of the actual level because I test many boats and know what the actual level is. I have seen a number of boats over the IMPBA level of 92 and had them put on a muffler, even loaning them one. The levels can drop 2-5+ db's with certain brands of mufflers. One of the most effective is T-Mod's from Mike Tyson from Richmond VA. Otto has them on his website noted in the link in post #2. The "Cheater" straight through mufflers, made by several guys, have little effect in noise reductions.

Almost any engine larger than the 21's, that is not using a muffled pipe, will exceed the 92 limit. NAMBA is 95 db but when they come to a IMPBA event they must comply with 92. The internal stingers can work on larger engines if the pipe is right and the stinger is done right. I have seen many that is not right and exceeds the 92 limit. But testing is the only way to know. You can get a meter from Radio Shack for about $50. Think about it.

We were starting to get some complaints at one of our NLMBC sites and decided to be proactive.

A buddy and I did some testing with a T-Mod and his Razor/RCMK/Hotpipe combo:

The first test with the muffler gave dB readings around 88-89:

For the second test we pulled the muffler and the hotpipe with just the internal stinger was just IMPBA legal at 91-92:

Both tests ran identical speeds at 50 mph even though we thought the louder run was faster.

According to Wiki, a 3 dB change in sound is equal to 1/2 the "power factor" which relates to how far the sounds travels:

Put an internal stinger and a T-Mod on my buddy Olly's 20 mono, now he's so stealth the competition does even know when they've been passed!
