AA 45 crankpin breakage

please look at frame number 7 CAREFULLY.

He is dribbling trans. fluid into the carb while the motor is running during his alc/oil flush out.

This will cause a hydraulicing effect while doing so.

(believe me, been there, done that, got the shirt.)

did the same thing a long time ago when I used to run the CMB90 grand prix motors. (the motors prior to the stacked crank motors)

popped a couple crank pins doing this and finally figured out what i did to cause that to happen.

This could very well have led to the crank pin failure.

Definitely no reason to dump in lubricant of any kind in one of these engines while it is running or with the plug in ..think about it . Even hard cranking a totally flooded (hydraulically locked ) engine in a hot pit thrash instead of loosening the plug or just removing it and clearing it out , could hurt the crank . I got that shirt already ...

If you want to lube up the engine disconnect the fuel supply , oil it spin it repeat etc as most guys do . I use copious amounts of outboard fogging oil , trans fluid , corrosion X or air tool oil , whatever i have at the time . Then after race day remove engines and hand oil massively before storage for next time . Sure hope this is an isolated incident

Found a good way to clean eng. pull the eng out of the boat. Fill with your favorite stuff. remove the plug and stick your air blow gun in the plug hole and let her rip. the eng will turn over like it is running under power. Makes a cool noise too.

This method will clean every crevice of the eng and cover it with oil.

My good friend has about a gallon of fuel through his 45 now and it's only getting better with every run.

As far as maintenance goes everyone has a prefered method and type of after run oil they use , I myself clean the engines out with WD 40 (plug almost out) and then remove the engines and spray Corrosion X turning by hand only.

The engine is then wrapped in paper towel and place on a block that has 3/16 dowel pins mounted vertically , this allows the oil to completely cover the large bearing and crank.

I have been doing this longer than I care to remember and have never had any issues with motors other than wearing them out LOL.

there are a great number of after run lubing techniques, but please remember NEVER dribble oil into the motor while it is running from now on.

have fun and run fast...........
