Hey guys, new to the outrigger scene and looking for some tips on how to get a 48" hydro to plane somewhat reliably. The engine (an older single mixture valve Picco 90) is running well and strong on shore, but as I toss it in the water 9 out of 10 times it'll go 10 feet and stall...when it catches and planes it goes really well, I would guess 60MPH easily and it handles well. I'm running it rich I believe 2 turns out from closed (lots of blue smoke). I don't have, and can't find a manual for this engine so I'm only guessing on the needle setting. The rig weighs about 12 lbs,the strut is set at 0 degrees with bottom of hull, If anyone here has a similar set up or has had experience with one, I would appreciate some help/hints on how to get a more reliable launch. The rig in question is the one that appears in my profile pic.

Check bearing in motor maybe running lean even though it appears rich

Thanks for the replies, guys. Okay, the bearing turns nice and smooth and I don't see any fuel seappage near the flywheel...the prop is an Octura 1667...2.4 3 channel land radio...3/32 fuel line

You need 5/32" fuel lines and brass tubes into the tanks also only 2 turns from closed is not enough, 3 or 3 1/2 should be more like it. Proping down will help. what is your nitro % ? Show some pics of the boat, tank set-up and strut set-up from the side.

Thanks, Brad. I'll try the bigger fuel lines first and see if it helps, then the prop...what would be a good smaller size? I'm not racing this rig, just wanna boot around the lake at a decent clip is all. I'll take some pics post them later.

Okay, here are a couple of pics of my set up:

You might want to turn your strut around to where the tapered part is facing forward, and the square end towards the drive dog(prop) That should help a little...not the only answer to your questions.

Turn the strut around definitely and what kind of drive ( square or do you have a collet on the engine that you tighten) as it looks like you are binding on the strut. Cable length shortens under load and if it is square drive you need thrust washers against the back of the strut. You should lower the strut to the centre line of the prop shaft should be even with the ride surface of the rear sponsons.Show some pic's of the whole boat.

Ok...I see you have no room to turn strut around. It will hit your straight shaft drive. I would take off strut and sand it the best I could to match the shaft log. Wont hurt...

Lots of unknowns and speculation. Vince indicated that it sounded good on the stand, so that lead me to think that its just too lean.... As the wise man once told me ( in a thick southern accent) , it might not run fast rich, but it doesn't run at all lean...

The square face on the strut and the flat face on the drive dog is blowing the water away from the prop on the launch. The 1667 looks to have no cup and the leading edge of the prop appear to be out of shape.

All of those items put together are causing huge slippage for the prop on the launch. This in turn causes the boat to not accelerate as soon as it hits the water. It then slows downs and gets very wet. The relatively cold engine then flames out.

Since the boat seems to run ok when it does get up and running on plane, I am sure there are no real powers system issues.

Get that drive line clean and check out the prop and I'm sure your launch success will improve a great deal. For super easy launching use an X467. It will not slip at all on the launch. It won't be the fastest, but it will let you get farther into the learning curve on boat/engine tuning. From there a a properly cupped 1467, 1470, or 1667 will be good for more speed.

Added pics. Note taper on front of struts and radius on front of drive dog.

Thanks for the input, Andy...I will definitely try the x467, and far as the tapered drive dog goes, can they be purchased pre-tapered or is that a mod?

Vince, We make/sell the drive dog pictured, but you can simply grind a taper on yours if you have access to a bench grinder.
