It cracks me up how people think all this is new technology.. I was in rapid prototyping in the early 2000's,.. They have been printing metal parts for years.. powdered metal with a laser to bond the layers,.. then heat treat,..
 
I ran an Objet Eden 350 when interning and it made pretty good quality parts, but the material was really expensive.

I'm sure the technology has come a long since then, but I haven't seen any huge breakthroughs.

I did do some work for Sciaky which has some really promising and cool technology for Aersopace parts!
