Heres my question, can other brands be used such as featherlite, echo and McCulloch be used? Why does everybody use homelite engines? Is it because parts are more available for homelite engines? more power? better engine life? Im just curious because I always see homelite engines... If someone could fill me in on this that would be great. I would like to use a featherlite engine, for the boat im building, and I would like your thoughts on this...

Thank You,

Rob

I have tried a bunch of different brands, the Homelites are easiest to mount. Warehouse hobbys makes a ton of upgrades for them as well. They also lend them selves to self mods quite easily too. With the price drop on Zenoahs though you do not see a lot of people messing with the homelites anymore ether.

Basically, Im looking for a small engine, that has a clutch, with plenty of zip, and wont break the wallet... if thats possible? ;)

Shop at your local small engine repair shop, most times they will practically give away old whipper snipper engines. Like I mentioned, homelites are easiest, Mac's and Echo's would be my next choice. Stihls have great power and turn decent revs but you must be careful because some of them turn the wrong way.

Whipper snipper clutches don't hold up too good in wet boats, and purpose built ones are more expensive. I have used one and would advise to do without if possible, they are just one more headache.

There is a "Superior" brand engine that is a copy of a zenoah RC motor, they retail for $130, does not include a carby but they can be picked up for $15-$30, and it is air-cooled.

I would recommend a Zenoah over any other engine.

Hommies tend to blow apart when over reved.

Now you can get a cheep water cooled G23 zen 2 port.

Just have to watch for them.

They hold up good.

or just get a 231 Zen, There ready to go in from the box, macs, and echos, need a few mods done to them first.

To mod a weed eater engine to any way near a fun speed you will have twice the money invested than if you bought a used G-23 or a new Superior engine You get what you pay for with a Zen or Superior

Thanks for all to info guys, im new to the R/C stuff. Does Superior have a website, or is there an online hobby site that sells them?

Thanks,

Rob

Replica version of the Zenoah G230RC motor, very similar design (ok its the same thing). I believe the casting is better and the cylinder walls are thicker providing better heat dissipation. This motor includes all that is seen in the image. All parts are interchangeable with the Zenoah motor. It does not include the carb. You will have to get this seperate. Recommended carb is the WA-603 ORC replacement carb.
I would recommend sticking with one of the Zenoahs (G23PUM or G260PUM). This engine is a copy of the G230 and is designed for land use. It's not that it couldn't be made to work in a boat but it would take just that.....work.

You can get into a stock G260PUM under $300 new and if you can find a used one, less then that.
