Hi All,

Just wanted to let everyone know I will be building a B Hydro this winter and will probably be looking for some Help. I got a NR .21 LS for and engine and will be building a .21 FF for a boat. Correct rudder servo and throttle and third channel servos would be some info I will need? I was considering speedmaster hardware, then if need be i could change rudder blade for the cmdi blade ( I think it fits the speedmaster bracket?). Turn fin will be another question would CD machine be the ticket for that? I should go with a third channel needle correct? Since this is a NR engine rear exhaust I don't really see any nice looking cowls that are made for that ( its a big hack job fitting the 180° pipe in). A good starting prop would be a H7 or 1450?? Who would be a good choice to have the engine checked out to make sure it will run up to par? Ok this is enough questions to start with I do have more but its time for work so will be posting more real soon.

Thanks Again Everyone,

Paul

Look out D4 I'm not gonna let ya walk all over my little A rigger next season :)

Paul,

Since you asked - the FF is similar to the Roadrunner, so I would use:

Servos - MG ONLY:

* Rudder, Hitec 225MG or Futaba equiv

* Throttle & 3rd channel, Hitec 81MG or 85MG, or Futaba equiv

Cowl - Roadrunner

Turn fin - Roadrunner

Rudder, Strut & motor mount - Speedmaster

3rd channel - Don Ferrette's base with the OS needle unit

Prop - start with an H-5 or 1445. May end up with the H-7 or 1450 (cut down) but for starting use the smaller ones.

I would suggest Rod Geraghty for checking your Nova. Excellent workmanship at a fair price. 715-926-6096. Richard D

You can also use a hitec 645 for the steering.A good starting prop ABC 1716 easy to lunch and a fast prop.

A 645 servo is a great overkill for a 20 rigger. The 225MG is a mini servo with plenty of power and adds only a small amount of weight. A 645 will put a lot of weight on the strut for a 20. I use the 645 for my 40 riggers, not my 20's.

Thanks Guys,

You are the Best !!!

I have a 645mg in my D hydro and I have seen it in B hydro's too ( I think its over kill also, but I will consider something in between the 645 -225 servos for sure). I will get 2- 85mg for third channel and throttle.

Now regarding the the roadrunner cowl and turnfin where can those items be purchased, I have never seen them before? Also I wont be hacking to much of the cowl by allowing the 180° header to come out the side?

3rd channel needle from Don I know where to get that. :)

Hardware and props are all at LHS, I will go with all speedmaster stuff .

I have tried Rod a few times tonight (busy signal), will try a couple more times then try again tomorrow .

Thank You Again,

Paul

Thanks Scott,

I will get in touch with Ralph and see what its gonna cost for the parts I need :)

Paul, Not to step on Don's third channel needle, great item. Call Bill at Speedmaster sells carb SM-OS with OS inflight 3rd ch needle built right in for N/R 21. Only way to fly. ;) ;) ;) Ray Will post pic if you like.

YA YA Thats what you said about you D- Hydro :p

I agree with Ray S. The speedmaster carb with the OS 3rd Needle is the only way to go.

You dont need to send your NV off for any type of mods set the HC at .010-.008.

Run an OPS 3.5 nitro pipe or S-pipe at 3.00-3.25 inches.

Spend you money wisely and spend it on props from Andy Brown. A 1450 to 46 mm

with 3.3-3.5 cup would be a great choice. Run 60-70% Nitro and you will be in the high 60 low 70 MPH range.

You can take this to the bank,

The only thing I would change from a stock NR is get an Orlic head with head button and his teflon back plate quality items that make a difference.

That with the carb suggested and a well trimmed boat will easily run high sixties low seventies.

Thank You Again Everyone for all your Advice :)

I talked with Rod Geraghty last night and will be sending him 3-5 engines during the next Month. I will say this I have never talked to Rod before and all I can say is "He will take my poor engine performance right out of the equation, He is the Man !!". He suggested a modded K&B Black carb for the NR engine, but they seem very hard to find. I was planning on using the OPS3280 pipe I have, but 3-3.25 inches how is that being measured? I will check on the CMDi rudder, but would really like to keep all hardware the same manufacturer. Turnfin I still need to talk with Ralph, but the CD machine fin will probably win out over the roadrunner fin " just because I would like to help my district guys and there business's, its nice having custom parts close to home :) ". I will be trying either Andy's props or Mark's props but will use this info on getting that prop for sure.

Thank You ,

Paul

p.s. I will say this Terry, I never seen your D hydro run until I raced mine " you took second and I took third" those numbers will change.

That was at the D4 Championships.

Paul, the pipe measurement you asked about does not take into consideration the total length of header, and the length from piston center to start of header. The 3 to 31/4 is found by just measuring from the glow plug or piston center to weld on pipe. I believe Steve Wood may have some of the Grim Racer pipe measuring tools available to measure pipes this way. The tool works well on Novarossi. Two other pipes you may want to try are the Brown S pipe or the Brown fat pipe. These pipes are muffeled. I have not tried the new Brown billet pipes. The 3280 pipe has been around for many years and is a good pipe for Novarossi. Richard D

Paul, after the post you made about the troubles you were having with the marital forces when trying to go to the Indy Masters, maybe instead of thinking about pipe length and such you should be thinking of mop handle length and percentage of Pine Sol. Also, I don't think CMDI or Speedmaster make any hardware to keep you shackled to the wash pail. :p

Hey I am good to go next season, Wife has the week vacation in Jamaica with her family for a wedding. Soooo this means I get to do what I want to :)

Paul

p.s. Not all of us have great wives that actually support us in our hobby. My wife is great but just not when it comes to hobbies :(

what are her hobbies?

My wife doesnt really have hobbies, but her tastes are expensive.... in the form of electronic gadgets. Every time she gets some new apple/pod/phone/macbook/thing, my chains get a little looser...

Ummmmm this is kinda a funny one here.

First my wife was complaining she wanted to do Ballroom dancing with me as her hobby.......................... :( YUCK !!!!

Wednesday my wife gets home from work and says to me "Hey I found a new Hobby you can do with me, Falconry" . So next week Saturday I am going to a 2hr class on the the birds of pray and seeing what its all about with her, should be pretty cool ( MUCH better than ballroom dancing for sure).
