2004 IMPBA Gas Nationals - Notification of Schedule Change
Please be advised that the Cincinnati Model Boat Club, in conjunction with
IMPBA, have made a decision to re-schedule the 2004 Gas Nationals, due to
concerns over anticipated Cicada (large insect) infestation in the Greater
Cincinnati area ). Cincinnati, as well as other cities in a 10-state area,
is in a region affected by this problem. Due to the fact that this only
occurs one time every 17 years, CMBC unfortunately did not recognize this
issue at the time of setting the date for the event, however it has been in
the news frequently for the past months. In the past few weeks, several
experts have done soil examinations and concluded that this year's
infestation will be much more severe than what occured in 1987.
These insects are not harmful, however they are large, noisy and are
estimated to number 5 Billion in the Cincinnati area alone. Furthermore,
they are attracted to "buzzing" sounds, such as leaf blowers,
chainsaws....and yes....Gas Boats. They also could potentially bring fish
to the surface for feeding, which could cause DNF's. Current forecasts
predict the emergence to start around May 21, with an average life-span of 5
weeks. That would put our current schedule of June 10-13 right at the peak
of the brood.
As a result of this unforeseen issue, effective immediately CMBC is
temporarily suspending acceptance of registrations, and will soon
communicate the new schedule - as soon as we can confirm an acceptable
re-schedule date with IMPBA (likely to be in the month of September). For
those who have already registered, CMBC will either refund entry fees or
hold the funds pending
re-scheduling of the event.
We regret the schedule change, and any inconvenience it may cause you,
however we do feel that this decision is in the best interest of the racers,
and their families. We want this to be a memorable event for the right
reasons. For more information on the 17-year Cicada brood, please see
