I just went out to my truck and found the rulebook. It is called the William E. Lefeber Award.
"This is an award for outstanding sportsmanship and service to the organization. The award will be voted on and presented at the International Regatta each year. Nominations for this award may be sent to the IMPBA office at any time,or given to the President or Secretary during the International Regatta up to the cutoff timeannounced at the Awards Banquet. The members attending the banquet will do the voting."
This is considered the IMPBA's most prestigious Award given because it is voted on by your peers, not won because of how well you raced. The person that won, Randall Thomas did deserve it but there were many more at the race that could have won it.
It shouldn't take the chance of winning an Award at the race to motivate a person into being more helpful to others. It does recognize the people that go over and beyond to make it better for others. Randall busted his butt for at least 7 days working the computer, handling any electrical glitches, doing CD duties, racing 2 OB tunnels and pitting for his daughter in the Kid's Class. If you go into the Internats Picture page, you will see him in there inside Mark McCray's trailer on the computer. BTW, I'm in picture 4 driving the retrieve boat.
