    Stainless tanks

From experience, a metal tank with soldered seams leaks because the solder gets corroded. I am sure the vibration does not help either. I have used silver solder and also tin/lead solder with acid core. They both get corroded over time when exposed to fuel.

    Stainless tanks

I have made a few tanks in the past when I had access to a bench shear and sheet metal tools. I used Sta-brite silver solder. What I have found is that over time, the solder would get corroded. If you ever soldered a brass pickup tubing to the brass weight in those Sullivan tanks, you will...

    Cable collet runout.

I have the same issue with Prather and Aeromarine collets. Not every collet is the same. Some are better than others. The Octura and Steve Much collets have less runout in general. At least based on my experience. On a couple of collets, I have found the issue to be the face (the side that...

    Identify this hull

It is a Dumas CF deep vee 20. I believe the definition of deep vee is 16 degrees dead rise. I had two of these but I never measured it. The vee appeared to be shallower than 16 degrees. Have you run it? How does it handle with an outboard?

Surface drive stuffing tube transom exit hole

Thanks all for your replies. I have never thought of using plumbers putty to seal the hole. I may give it a try. I have no idea what's in plumbers putty. Will it affect adhesion if I decided to seal up the hole later? I am going to use a Speedmaster strut instead of a stinger drive. The...

Surface drive stuffing tube transom exit hole

Brad, I am going to put a period correct HP .40 in it ;-) I have never tried a stinger strut before. But from what I can see, it would allow for angular adjustment only. I cannot move the drive up and down. For sure I will stuff a lot of pool noodles in the hull to keep it afloat. Still, I...

Surface drive stuffing tube transom exit hole

Rebuilding a 30 year old Dumas CF .40 deep vee and converting it to surface drive. I noticed it is customary to drill the stuffing tube exit hole over sized to about 1/2". I see it would allow for some small adjustment. But the hull will take on water if it is not moving. Is there anything...

    Thick Epoxy

Hi Brad, Micro balloon is phenolic resin. It sands easily and it is good for forming fillets. But it is weak. Also, unless you mix a lot of it, the epoxy/balloon mix will flow while it sets. Cabosil is colloidal silica. It is much stronger and it makes the epoxy thixotropic. I use it to...

    Thick Epoxy

I don't like micro balloon either. But adding Cabosil will make the epoxy thixotropic. I mix Cabosil to the epoxy when I attach the deck to the hull. If I did not, the epoxy will not stay on the 1/8" formers

    Shading technique

Chris, I am thinking of using KlassKote epoxy paint. But after some good results using Rustoleum and then clear, I am tempted to try the same approach. The hull will have a KlassKote white base color. I will do the black in KlassKote as well. Mike, I see in your other post that you painted...

Piston orientation on K&B 7.5 inboard.

Yes, the intake side. As you have already said, the engine will self destruct if the teflon plug faces the exhaust port

    Shading technique

Thanks Charles and Mike for your replies. I am thinking of starting with the light color first. Seems logical to me. But to blend and shade smoothly, I think I need to do it while the previous color is still wet. That would mean I need to get all the colors prepared. I have a gravity feed...

    Gummy parts!

I would not put the entire engine into a cleaning solution. Immersing aluminum, brass and steel in contact with each other in an ionic solution will cause galvanic corrosion. I have not looked it up yet but I will bet in this case the aluminum (case) get corroded. It is fine if you...

    Shading technique

All, Refinishing a .40 size deep vee and I want to duplicate the Dumas Scarab 55KV paint scheme. The free board goes from a light teal to blue and a dark violet. It will require some shading a blending. Question: do you start from the lightest color and then progress to dark or the...

    Nor-star Kingfisher help needed

Two things: 1. The prop may be too big for the motor. The motor may be drawing more current than it can handle 2. The prop looked like a right hand prop. So the motor has to be turning clockwise. It is a brushed motor. If it is set up to run left hand (most likely), making it turn...

    Turtle wax polishing compound

Thanks Mike and Gary for your replies. Silicone is very difficult to get rid of. It is for this reason that I do not use any mold release that has silicone in it. I have had a hull pulled from a mold using a silicone release. Despite wet sanding the hull, there were still a couple of spots...

    Turtle wax polishing compound

I want to see if I can buff out some blemishes and Turtle wax polishing compound is all I have. Does it have any silicone in it? I want to make sure i can coat over the paint if I cannot buff out the blemish. I will not use anything with silicone in it as I will not be able to paint over it...

    Lettering with border

I have actually used the Frisket mask and sprayed the black. Then I removed the mask and used a transfer tape to place the red Coors inside the white area. I posted pictures on another thread. But here are the pictures. I liked the results and will use this technique again on future projects.

    Klass Kote Greens

So the Rustoleum 2X has been drying for a week. It is softer than epoxy paint for sure. I applied the graphics after wet sanding the entire hull with 1000 paper. I used KlassKote clear. For a small job like this, I am too lazy to use my touch up gun. I decided to give the Prevail sprayer a...

    Klass Kote Greens

Jerry, I did use the Rustoleum 2X gloss because that's what they had at the time. Actually, gloss paint is not a bad idea as it will make imperfections stand out. I like to sand the entire boat with 600 before clear and the gloss paint would let me know if there is any spot that I missed. I...
