To all, head this warning. REPLACE the smoke detectors every few years and the batteries more than once a year. If not, you might meet some new friends

I woke up at 05:15am to find the whole house full of smoke. At 05:25, 911 was called. By 05:45, the volunteer fire department was here.. NICE JOBS GUYS!!!!

Anyway, we are all fine. Just shaken'd up a bit due to what occurred.

I had a fire going in the fire place all day yesterday. Tossed in the last piece around 01:00 am, fell asleep around 01:45. Woke up around 03:00, no problem. My eyes were hurting around 05:15 when I woke up.

State Farm has my $$ from here on out. Already got an advanced check. Repair crews are already out here looking at the damage.

Don't know when I'll be back online. Most likely this coming weekend at work. But gotta go for now...

Take care my friends...

Mark, I'm happy to hear that you and the family are okay!

I've got Allstate and am paying through the nose for their insurance but when my Living room ceiling collapsed a few years back from ice and water damage, they had a crew here that night getting my house back in shape.

Glad to here you are all OK Mark! Keep us posted and let us know if you need anything!

Man...bummer days..I haven't been on the board in ages but I'm sorry to hear what happened. My wife and I carry all of our insurance through State Farm and they do a great job. I bought a MILLION DOLLAR insurance policy from them for practically nothing.......for people that don't know about them they can really save your butt if anyone tried to sue you......

Mark, I'm glade you are all safe! You are very lucky that is was such a localized fire. Let me know you need anything. Very scarry!

To all: THANKS for all the support during this crisis.. Just your kind words and thoughts are all we need at this time. All the neighbors and Kristy's school are looking out for us also. We should be moving back into the house on Thursday. The complete repair job should take about 3 - 4 months. At that time, we will be selling the house and property. What irks Mary and I, we have been working on the house so we can sell it. Tom, that is the main reason why you don't see me on IW that much lately.

To let another cat out of the bag, the reason for the house sale is that Mary and I are planning a divorce once the house and property sells. After 13+ years, there are differences we can't work out. So it is best to end this before any real damage occurs with the kids. The two of us are being very civil about this. We already made a list of who gets what. No major discussions on items. This will be a non-contested split. The kids will go with her and I will get them the good part of the summer and any other time I want them. The fire just extended our parting date out a month or two. We have been working hard to get the house in shape for the best possible price. Someone was to show up Thursday to measure the living room for carpet. NOT

Oh yea, all my boats were on the mantle.. Gone I say, ashes.. You can send any NEW :D boats, motors, radios to the following address.. :p :p Just kid'n.. All the boats made it just fine..

Oh yea, the official report for cause is this: After 30+ years of the house settling, the chimney cracked open an area in which the cresol started a fire within the cracks. In turn, the frame work that was above the mantle caught fire.

As the chief inspector stated: When the battery is changed out every 6 months (time change weekend), make sure the whole detector is cleaned out. (we didn't do this - must have forgotten due to working on the house and the pending divorce)... Dust will stop the unit from working properly. Change out the detectors every 4 - 5 years, even those that are listed as lasting for 10 years. The battery check is only for that, checking battery power. It does not check to see if the fire sensor works correctly.. Our fire alarm never went off  to alert us to the danger we were in.
