Hi gang
I’m building a zippkits super sport and this will be the first paint job I do other than a little rattle can on another boat. I did buy an HVLP gun from Amazon last summer I wanted to use but I’m a bit intimidated by the options and sequence of sprays required (not to mention the PPE required!)

I have some time as I’m in the northeast and we won’t have warm temps for several months still. I’m about to apply my second coat of epoxy to seal this bad boy and trying to figure out what to do for paint.

Describing the paint job I want (see attached) mainly a white hull with a few green pinstripes (remember Sinclair gas (the Dino?)) the bilge area will be gray.

I heard epoxy paint from klass of kotes will give a nice quality paint but I don’t have a paint booth at the moment. I may go this route since I’ve got the itch and plan on building one kit per year.

Should I just stick with rattle can and 2k clear? Can I get pinstripe decals that bend or should that be painted off?

Sport boat only no racing planned.

Thanks everyone!

Good idea about the sign shop. Thanks for your insight.

I heard someone on here painted (brushed) klass kote on. Is that a viable option? Might do that just so I don’t have air paint particles in the air.

If you want a decent finish. Sand the cured epoxy with 180 using a wood paint stick for a block.Sand till you start to hit wood.stop.Go over again with 320 by hand and make it smooth. Now put the decals and what not on. 2 coats clear, wait 30 min 2 more and should be looking like what your after. You may need to let the 1st application cure 48 hrs then sand with 600 and spray 2 more coats of clear to make it really slick.I spray in a booth but have done jobs outside that turned out great too. Paint jobs depend on the work sanding, sanding, sanding. No Magic Hard work=nice paint job.20240504_123651_resized.jpg

That looks so good. How did you do the pinstripes?

I use 3m 1/8 in.purple or blue fine line tape. its like pin striping, bending is tricky. It takes d a lot of time making sure its straight. I would begin with a old roll of pinstripe on a practice vehicle. Once you figure out how to bend and make straight lines. your set to try it on your boat.20250201_221453_resized.jpg

Yes, I learned the hard way using rattle cans definitely worth using two-part paint, klass kote it's great it stand up to about anything high nitro fuel gasoline whatever you throw at it

OK once you figured how to lay the 1/8 tape down. Use masking tape right away on top of the fine line tape along the bends you did. There is only a short time before the tape loosenes on the nice bend you made. The wide tape runs along the top of the 1/8 and razor blade to trim, again on top of the fine line (without cutting through I might add) a lot to take in but I'm sure you can do it with practice! JP
