Tony you may want to look at getting an aircraft altimeter. You can find non encoding ones for under $50.00. I have both a Kinsler gauge and the altimeter. I find that the altimeter shows subtle changes before the kinsler picks them up. I just set the altimeter to a reference setting the fist day I got it and leave it alone. I can see the air change from race site to race site and throughout the day easier and with more detail the the Kinsler gauge. The reason I bought the Kinsler was because I thought it would provide more information than the altimeter and take into account things like humidity but it does not appear to do any more than the altimeter and it takes longer to respond and because the face is smaller than the altimeter it is not as easy to see small changes as fast on the Kinsler.

Eric thanks for the tip, is their anything that I should look for when researching an altimeter? differnt styles or uses, I saw that there are "radar alts" and pressure alts? Thanks Tony j

Eric,

Where did you buy your altimeter for <$50.00?

You need a pressure alt. And if you keep an eye on ebay you can find them there quite often or if you have a local surplus store that specializes in electronics and military stuff. The FAA about 10 years ago required encoding altimeters be installed in all aircraft that fly into a TCA. So there are many of the older ones out there that had to be replaced. If you ahve a local general aviation airport around check with the smaller avionics shops they may be able to help too.
