I have a 'new' OS 45RSR marine engine that's 15 years old. It is a rear intake side exhaust. While it develops decent power, it runs rough.

Would a heavy flywheel smooth out the engine? Or would it have the opposite effect?

Thanks,

Kez

A heavy flywheel will help smooth out the combustion pulses, at the expense of throttle response.

If you go with a heavy flywheel, make sure it's balanced. You can use a regular prop balancer.

Why do you drive on a parkway, and park on a driveway?

Kez,

you'll probably have to put more effort into launching the boat, a bigger flywheel will make it harder to get the engine up and going, also slower acceleration like PJ said.

Thanks Guys for your input.

Other than using a heavier flywheel, is there any tricks to make an engine run smoothly?

I have always balanced my rotors (most are not well balanced including OS, K&B, Picco) but I cannot really balance a drum as there is nowhere on the heavy side to remove material from.

I also find most of the cable nuts on the market (tried Octura, Dumas, Prather and Aeromarine) has a wobble or run out. This, I think, is the main source of vibration.

What do you do when your cable nut has a runout?
