I know the be fuel proof the boat needs to be painted with a two part paint. But what if i used a good paint, and covered it with clear, or a clear epox?

Any ideas?

There's no such thing as fuel proof. Today's nitros are better lended for more power and consistancy. However, they can eat the paint right off your boat in a heart beat. If your going to paint a wood boat you'll need a good primer that also seals the wood. Clear coat is always the best way to go for long lasting high luster finishes that make polishing and clean up a snap.

The two part paints w/o clear coats always leave people's nasty greasy finger prints all over the boat. And you'll find in time as fuel splashes all over the boat it'll cause staining, spotting or wrinkling.

just my .02¢

I use Krylon (walmart) and pactra (small cans avail. at hobby shops) rattle cans for all of my colors. I then use PPG High Solids clear (automotive paint)to cover it. couple coats of clear and its done, nice shine, no problem with high nitro. I run 60%. My boats turn out nice, have won a few concourses, and the paint is DIRT CHEAP. The clear, is not as cheap, but with out it, the colors would be gone with the nitro....

You have to be careful of the brand paint you use, Krylon and pactra work great with the PPG, other brands like plastikote...ect will blister severely when you apply the clear and ruin the whole paint job. (beleive me, I KNOW)

You can use dupli color automotive spray cans if needed. And there are some good polyurethane clears that are cheap. Whamm Bamm Polyurethane clear has worked great for me . I have painted a few things with it and it works great and @ $20 for a quart with activator ($13 +$7) you cant go wrong. You probably wont find much on the web about it and I have only seen it in the car craft parts stores but I am sure someone else carries it. I have done a few test panels and poured Red Max 50% on it and left it for 3 weeks in my garage in the summer. The nitromethane and alchohol evaperated and the remaining oil and whatever wiped off wiith not even a hint of where it was. There was no special preperation and no wax applied before this was done. Only let the clear cure for 1 week and on to the test. My boats are washed inside and out when I am done running so I wont ever need to test this again. THe finish was very good considering I was using a $20 touch up gun. Im not a painter so if I can use this stuff anyone can. One leason I learned was Just follow the directions and when it says wait till the clear flashes before the next coat is applied... WAIT.

I'm going to put my 2 cents in about 2-part epoxy clears: do not use them over white and other nice, bright colors. The epoxy clear has quite an amber tint to it and it will make your bright, colorful boat look like it was painted 30 or 40 yrs ago! Ask me how I know  ! I'm getting ready to sand this off of a boat that I finished about 4 yrs ago. I'm sure its going to be a lot of work  !

Use automotive clears!!!!!!!!!

I agree on the epoxy clear it will yellow after a time, I wonder if the new Klass Coat stuff will do the same as the lod K/B or Hobbypoxy clears. anyone use the clear Klass Koat? the klass coat paint wont really need clear over it.

Phil, from what I've heard, people are very happy woth the Klass-kote paints. I stopped at their booth last week and took a lot at the paints, they do look really nice. The paints are compatible with K&B epoxies and Hobby-poxy. It looks like K&B has the Ultra-poxy back out also.

My whiplash gas boat is painted with klasskote orange and the wood is cleared i also cleared the orange so far looks like any other clear cote.Does have a slight golden tint but looks great on wood.My last years whiplash was cleared with Imron and guess what it yellowed also.So whats the big deal i think its a great product.I was a firm believer in Imron but too costly so im using Klass Kote from here on out.

What is the deal here  ? Isn't Imron a brand name for two-part urethane clearcoat? Do other people have problems with automotive clear yellowing? I thought that automotive clear was the bomb for coating rc boats. I don't think that real cars' clearcoats yellow. Well, not unless they're real old, I guess. Automotive clearcoat people, please chime in!

I've never painted a boat that yellowed. But I've always PPG DELTRON. Imagine if your car yellowed.....

I've bought boats that were cleared that turned yellow and it was usually cheap spray, or even the K&B stuff that yellowed on it.

I have always sanded my boats down real good with 220 grit then spray on a coat of miniwax helmsman spar urethane to seal and water proof the wood. I would then sand it down again then recoat with the Miniwax. I would do this a couple of times until the hull is nice and smooth. Then I sand it down one more time before appling the primer. After letting the primer sit for a couple of days I will then wet sand the boat using 400 grit then 600 grit until the primer is nice and shiney. And finally I will shoot er down with either krylon or some other Automotive paint. Slap on some decals and shoot over it all with PPG clear coat. B)

Dont ask mee why the Imron yellowed i think it was the epoxy under the clear cote only yellowed where the sun was on it not under the cowl.So if you use epoxy to seal the wood the clearcote will still yellow so thats not a big issue with me.Thats why i figured the Klass Kote was good as its a epoxy like the epoxy i used to clear the wood with. Now everyone talks so much about west system but the 207 special coating hardner to make the clear type coating is yellow.Unlike the the system three clearcote doesnt have but a slight tint not yellow. So in conculsion dont use any epoxy if your worried about yellowing. If i would of used straight imron to seal wood and clear it it wouldnt of yellowed but at over 75 bucks to buy the clear i can get by with Klass Kote for have the costs.Just my thoughts jump on in .

Okay, Roxy, it sounds like your boat's clear yellowed where it was sprayed over epoxy resin, right. Yes, epoxy resin will certainly yellow over time. If it yellows over unpainted wood, I'm not too worried about it. I only worry about clearcoat yellowing over colorful paint because it makes it look so oooooooold!

I use imron paints and specifically imron clear all the time. I have never seen it yellow.

Imron pigment paints (ie: colors) really don't even need primer. If the surface is prepped well, a light pigment coat application of the imron is a good idea. Let it dry properly, then sand thoroughly and apply a finish coat of paint. This method produces very solid paint jobs and gives great durability.

Your paint is only as good as your primer.

Well my 2 worth.....When I have to clear coat,I use PPG automotice clear.

This is a very clear/clear and wont yellow your lite colors...

I used...DC1100 with DC1275 hardner...its very nice clear!
