Never really needed one , just mapquested directions before I left  But with the new job , I have to provide my own for my van. Ended up grabbing a Tomtom XL 355 from the pawn shop up the street with a 6 month warranty for 40 bucks- I must say , just farting around with it and setting my preferences - I like it, wish I gotten one when I ran AC service <_<

They are nice for alot of things. But then again I once had to back up our crane truck with 35 foot trailer 6 blocks when it said a street went through when infact it was a dead end

I just use my phone now

Have had a Tom Tom for about 5 years and have used it to go accross the U.S from Cal to Maine 3 times.. It has beeen a life saver..Just make sure to up date the maps ..

Give me a road map or atlas. I've had the dead end deal multiple times and had a BRAND NEW Tomtom send a bus I was on the wrong way three times on one trip. Those were enough to make me NOT want one

Yeah, I've got one but only use it on trips to cities that I only go to maybe once a year. Some are easy to get into but a pain in the wazoo to get out of, that's where they come in handy.

Have a Nuvi but pretty much use it to watch for traffic jams when i travel. has an icon that truns yellow and red when there is slow traffic ahead on the highway. and will reroute you if needed. I used it when I drove semi also to track my road time and estimate arrival times. pretty handy tool sometimes

The car GPS units need to have the maps updated every year and the lifetime map renewal is worth it's weight in gold if you can get it (Garmin offers it). I've done quite well with my Garmin Nuvi but I've heard numerous stories about the TomToms being way off.

Driver should have known better. Professional drivers will tell you its only a tool. You must still know whats ahead by looking at the map.

I used google earth on my phone, the atlas, city road maps for places like chicago , new york etc. , the GPS, when I hadnt been to a location. google erth would allow me to see the traffic pattern around the bussiness I was going to, which drive to go in ( not perfect info all the time but helped alot.

One important lesson I learned was things change so be ready. most maps are atleast a year old and not everything stays the same

I think the phone gps is safer where it actually tells you when to turn instead of looking at a gps Robert

Ya no Sh#$ im so tired of having to deal with spanish.Go to mexico sh#$ not in english there. But i use my phone works good.

I never have to look at my Garmin, just listen to the voice prompts, which BTW can be changed. Mine's now set up for the voice of an Aussie chick. :D
So whats her name  and did you change the little car to a big truck!!! My buddy did that and calls the lady Tiffany after my wife :(

The only problem with the using a phone is if you get caught using it by the police you will get in trouble while driving a commercial vehicle.... Not saying you drive a CMV but I do!!!

I dont see why you would get in trouble for using the phone it is not like you have to look at it, it talks to you set it on the seat and listen Robert

Only used a tom-tom once(it was a gift). Ended up on the right street- in the wrong town
That was what the one the bus driver was using wanted to do. We were headed from Seattle to Vancouver WA and it was trying to take us past our destination and into Portland OR FROM VANCOUVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say, the driver took it back the next day and bought a Garmin

I use it in my car, as the nav is installed from factory. Works very well, just need to update the base, that is buying a new dvd from time to time.

Used a special GPS mode to get the exact topspeed of the car.

Btw I have an iPhone with Tom Tom West-Europe on it, which works excellent. Use the GPS signal to drive exactly the speed limit, since the cops use a stretch of road, a few miles to measure the speed. Not only at one point speed measuring.

Btw I use GPS in my airplane too. Comes in very handy. ;)
