atf, nothing special. have not broken a cable in years. old style pump can with a hole below the pto . lube before and after the run. no problems

As Pete said Castor Never broke a cable in 35 years.Replace that plastic liner and put a brass one in
 
I like Merc 2-4-C too.

Lately I've been putting it in a 60cc syringe so I get a measured amount each time. I shoot it into the stuffing tube then insert the cable while blocking the motor end, keeps the grease where it's supposed to be.
 
If you are using grease there is NO grease better than Green Grease. It's washout resistance and lubricating properties are far superior to ANYTHING else on the market. Best of all it is available locally at most auto parts stores.

It is absolutely the best. I tested about 25 different greases and nothing came close.
Forget the high end synthetics. I even bought several that were for lubricating the wet end of a paper machine and they were actually not so good at washout resistance compared to several others. Green Grease was superior to all of them.
