Steve David and the Oberto team got the benefit of a Dave Villwock mistake in the last corner of the Columbia Cup final heat. According to head referee Noonan, Villwock pinched down on the Oberto in the last corner, a clear violation of the rules that state that if a leading boat enters a corner and does not have at least 7 boat lengths in front of the inside boat, the leader must maintain it's lane. Villwock had only three or four boatlengths and was caught squaring off the corner, moving from lane3/4 into lane 2 at the apex of the turn and back out to lane 3/4 at the exit bouy. That mistake cost Villwock the win, 150 points and a monetary fine. More importantly, it cost the U-96 the high points lead. By being penalized, the U-96 went from 1st to 5th, costing around 275 points in position and putting the Oberto back into the high points lead. What was almost funny is that Villwock claimed the sun made it hard to see, he had a stuck throttle AND that he was trying to avoid a dead boat, even though that boat was past the exit bouy. I'm not buying that one as Steve David had no trouble holding his inside lane in the same conditions, less the stuck throttle of course. I have only two words for this one
GO OBERTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
