Heads Up

Milwaukees 28V Lith Ion is out this month for cheap!(compared to Lipoly) Theres 7 of these 3000mah sealed sub C like 4V cells with balancing circuitry, and V meter bar graph built into each pack. I don't know about you guys but i prefer this type of cell contruction over the flimsy LiPoly toothpaste tube construction. Suppose to be lighter than an 18v sub C Nicad power tool pack Don't know the amp draw cababilities but its built for rugged power tool use. Problably could parallel 2 of these in a big offshore setup and run forever.

Questions:

1) What FE chargers would handle lith ion at this power level?

2) Can they be fast charged?

3) Are/which BL and Brushed Escs able to handle lith ion technology?

They told me 100% of the cells were allocated to powertool.

I have also been told that these cells can explode (NASA battery testing company), and I don't mean just a fire.

We are assuming that the powertool has at least 3 methods of protection when using these. Not saying can't be done, but be carefull.

thanks

Steve, at the moment I'm really not concerned with buying individual cells, my setups could be modified to accept a `sealed' stock V28 pack. I really like the idea of the built in V28 equalizing circuit and battery level monter. Just add a deans connector strap it in and go. The stock V28 unit should still lighter than 28 cell nimh equivalent. Sounds like the Astro 109 may be capatible. The V28 unit is even more affordable. :)

Ken it says they are capability of roughly twice the runtime. When you have taken the drills apart what cells capacities are you finding?

They are 3000mah cells Steve.

It's not going to work, I can tell you that right now. That pack will have protection on it and unless your running a 5mph trawler, it will kick off. You will have to hack into it.

Steven

I'm on the V28 mailing list so i have the mailer on the new V28 units. They are comparing them to 2400 nicad. These are 3000's @4V nominal per cell. Cells look similiar in construction to current Sub C's. Believe me if they are mass marketing these they should have went through a lot of R & D work. Check out the preorder pricing on this site. I'm excited!

4.0V fully charged, it's a 3.6v chemistry. Drill packs have welded tabs between cells. You need to study drill pack constant current demands, it's not 50 amps constant.

Now having said this, it may be possible to hack it and use the cells.

thanks

Correct the casing could be opened, battery bars or braid added to the cells a little 12ga with a deans and your in business. However most drill packs i'ved open have cardboard tubing around the cells for insulation. Wet cardboard will short the cells. If that be the case they would need recovering with a wrap i would leave the equalizing and battery moniter circuits for safety.
