Hi All,

I bought several foam blocks many years ago with the intention of building a couple of sponsons with them. These are the green urethane foam blocks and they can be shaped nicely. However I later learned that these blocks are also used for flower arrangement and they can soak up a lot of water! Has anyone tried to build with these urethane foam blocks? I think it will be a problem if it soaks up water like a sponge.

Thanks,

kez

I would just go to Lowes or Home Depot and get the pink white or blue foam insulation in thickness you need, You can even get it in part sheets, or vist a building site as they will have cutoffs to get rid of. RECYCLE!!

Flower pot foam will end up packing in under the running surfaces leaving you with a hollow between the ply and foam. Scrap it, you wont regret it

I have seen it in front sponson construction and it will not hold up to any sort of impact or abuse, nor does it sand well. Witnessed a local racer here park his boat on the bank and blow the sponson apart. Klegecell is the way to go. You can order what you need from Mark Bullard here on Iwaters. Pink or blue foam is way better than hobby/pottery foam if you're on budget.

Thanks all for your replies. Actually I bought the material some 30 years ago prompted by a construction article in the Flying Models magazine of an outboard rigger. I bought the plans but never got around to building it. The article called for green urethane foam but I noticed it gets crushed easily...

Into the trash can it goes.

Could always do a flower arrangement for the wife.
