Sam-

I had the pleasure of meeting your father at the 1981 or 1982 Indy Unlimited Race.

There was never a dull moment around your Dad. He was very passionate about Model Boat

Racing and I had a great time hanging out with him. I would like to know if you can remember

who made the Coonass Twin you are referring to in your thread? There was a boater many years ago

that had a very nice running twin named the COONASS EXPRESS and I wonder if your boat was one

of his design. Do you or anybody remember that guys name? I have tried to recall it for many years.

Your vintage twin looks very nice and would like to get an update once you get her running.

Best Wishes, Rick Kirbitz

Charlie Chauvin the boat was a crapshooter,,, he was from Houma Louisiana,

great guy all around,,,

Hi Rick, Yes Charlie Chauvin built the Coonass Express, it had ops .65s in it, It was a bit different to the crapshooter. This one is a 90% version of that boat with .45s in it. I have also built a 21 size and a 67 size, they run great.

Cheers, Sam.

Thanks Paul, James and Sam for your response. Have tried to remember Charlie Chauvin's name for years.

25 to 30 years ago, I was at a race somewhere down south, maybe Huntsville, Alabama? I watched the Twin

Coonass Express race all weekend. Wow...It was two tone Beige/Brown and was the first Rigger that I know of

that had a turn fin with a curve to it. The boat ran like it was on rails and left a great impression. Nice to know his

name after all these years. Great Memory.

Rick.

Hi Charlie, still waiting for pipes and carbs to turn up but when all sorted i will, cheers, Sam.

Hi Charlie, I got my parts a week ago, just been a lil slack, will get back into it soon, Thanks. Sam.

Heya Guys

Charlie Chauvin and I raced together

I have a picture of his twin at home but it will be somewhere in October before I can scan and post it.

He helped me get started and I got my first OPS 40 from him

Most valuable lesson I learned from him was "dont change things on race day" if it ran good while practicing race it like that.

Your Boat looks Nice Sam

have fun with it

Richard

Hi Richard, Look forward to seeing your photos. My Dad stayed with Charlie in 81 for the Nats.

Will put some progress pics up soon, Cheers, Sam.

Here's a pic from the Nov. RCM of Charles Chauvin. This was the article for the 1981 IMPBA Nats. This was my first Nats, and I'll never forget Charlie. I had to borrow a set of crystals to get into the 1/8th scale feature, and he was the only one to step up. I went on to win my first national championship due to him.

A great guy!

Thanks,

Steve Ball

Steve, my father & I also went to those nats in Indy. We watched the trophy trials and that boat cornered like it was on rails. Better than any other boat at that speed.
