does anyone have a turn fin with a spar or just the spar that's around .21-sized? the fin on my OB rigger is just slapped on the side of the sponson, so turning ain't too great....anything that would mount anywhere and give me a place to mount the fin closer to the transom would probably work.

thanks for looking,

Joe

Mike, I've got some heavy-duty CF that I picked up in Toledo for the HH .12 to try out. I could make you up one easily or send you a blank to make your own. They are 1"x12" and about 1/8" thick.

mike,

i was thinking of doing that but i don't have the tools to shape it [put some rectangular holes in it for weight reduction].....i had 3 very thin strips of steel i think lying around, i tried making "ply-metal" type stuff by putting a layer of epoxy in between each one and clamping the whole thing together, results wern't, well...um....."up to par"- even though i roughed the surfaces before the epoxy didn't take, and slight bending pressure made it crack and crumble.

ron,

i sent you a PM

My outboard hydro uses a piece of aluminum bar like Mike H. described with a brace from the side of the tub to the fin support. No holes in it other than mounting holes. The fin is quite aways from the back of the sponson. Online metals is a good company to deal with.

If you use the aluminum it will only be about 1.5 to 1.75 oz. The sundowner kit that Mark and I have use the aluminum bar. It is not lighten in anyway. You need to build the brace. Use some 8/32 or 10/32 SS all thread. Two nuts and washer on the tub side and two on the spar side. This set up gives you adjustablity on the fin.

Look at the 7.5 outrigger thread that is in the outboard section. There are some pictures that show the same set up that we use. Even though his has got too big of a motor on that boat.

Mike

look for something called G-10 or FR4 it is an epoxy glass material that is very strong.
