I am seeing a lot of pics of boaters using a heat wrap on their tuned pipes.

Was curious what is the most popular product to accomplish this?

Is there a special coating that is applied to accomplish heat retention also?

I heat wrapped a pipe that was inside the boat like on a Sport 40 and it made it worse. I don't know why but the boat ran terrible. Took it off and the boat ran better.

Idea of the tape is to create heat to try burn more fuel..but not allways the case .there are variables in which can affect like ,,weather ..fuel..plugs..etc its a whole other story

and also.. you have all had the dreaded water down... the tape helps keep the pipe from cooling to fast.. this helps the boat climb back on pipe.. its not ALL water in the carb ja-kno...........

David right more heat in the pipe and you need more fuel and it also tricks the pipe in thinking it is shorter then it is.

I believe all tuned pipes have to be tuned in length to achieve their best performance in your set up, fuel, plug, prop, atmosphere and on and on.

I think the tape will give more consistency in pipes that are exposed to the elements. Air temp and water exposure.

If you add the tape to the pipe, I would think it best to retune length.

My opinion.

If your running a pipe at 8;00 inches and you tape the pipe set it back to 8;00 inches. The more heat in the pipe will make the engine run lean and you need to put more fuel in the engine and if you can burn more fuel it will makes more RPM and horse power.

I agree 100%It is all about the scavenging and timing of the pipe working with your set-up.

And heat is a major factor in this process.

But you may and I say may find more rpm if you work with the length of the pipe also.

Again it depends on your load and set up.

That's right what you are saying.Get your set up were you what it and try the wrap on your pipe and set it back to the some place you had it and go try it. you will like it.

Think of it this way.

When you are running slow there is not much heat in the pipe the tune length longer. When you start running faster the pipe heats up and the tune length gets shorter.

So it is long when you need it to get up and shortens as you speed up. As long as you tune the needle for the top end it will all be good.

As the heat builds up it will rev higher as long as you don't go lean on the top end and take a plug.
