The opening is for the bags of dry ice to easily slip in and out of during runs.

Are you sure that's not a floating radio box? Looks like there may be a plexi floor to the radio box that is above the exhaust.... Looks can be deceiving if both the lid and floor are clear.

I had a 67 rigger that hit a log in the water and launched into a tree. Its what happend when you came too wide out of turn 4. He is new and will learn, don't discourage a newbee!!

My first couple boats, the only thing I put in a water tight box was the receiver and battery, servos were out in the open. But they were water proof servos and they never failed. I was looking at the Futaba page a while back and it looks like they don't have a good selection of waterproof servos like they used to. The old S134 was water proof and it never failed me.
