I began working on my new JD Sport 20 last week. The basic design is the same as the boat I built last year that won the Sport 20 Class at the NAMBA Nats in Salt Lake City and placed second at Hobart. Photo of the 2013 JD Sport 20 taken at Salt Lake City.

However, a couple of things have been changed.

1. The radio box will be positioned in front of the engine.

2. A new Nova Rossi DD will provide the power and the new NR black quiet pipe for the tuned exhaust.

3. An O.S. inflight needle valve will be installed.

Today I managed to get the drive system installed and right side sponson and side epoxied to the framework.

The cowling will be the same as last year's boat - an epoxy glass cowling made by Mike Hughes from the mold for the Bruce Mooring "Snake Sport 20."

very nice.. I see the engine rails like I did on mine.. looks good,.. I'm really envious of your power pack.,.. NR DD and the new pipe.. that will be a rocket..

Spent the last two days building the front mounted radio box. Lots of cutting and fitting. I've ordered G&M radio box seals from Gary Preusse and they should be here on Monday. The servo on the left is for throttle, middle is steering, and servo on right will be for on board mixture.

Looks good Jerry. I'm working on getting my new power-plant/pipe combo installed in my Snake sport 20.

Man you have made good progress since I saw it a few nights ago! Maybe we can go run it when I get back!

I think the three of us need to go do some testing!

Jeff, that would be awesome! Let me know next time you'll be over on this side.

On the west side right now, since Sunday night. Fixing/installing stuff needs to happen first, but that won't be long!

The construction and installation of engine, running hardware, and radio have been completed. The hull will be receiving a coating of West Systems in the next few days. Mike Hughes is finishing the cowling. I plan to test the boat sealed with West Systems before painting.

Happy New Years.

Looks great! Need to find a friend who can tig weld aluminum.

Why did you install carbon rod boom between sponsons?

Is the carbon rod not solid, all the way across the hull? Did you cut it short because of the engine interference? You should re-think that and move it forward (or back... any insights here?) so it clears the motor and allows you to include one continuous piece. It would reduce ounces, many more ounces in all the other framing it impacts. JMHO.

Looks nice as a V2 attempt,

DJ

I installed the rod with the engine removed and didn't take into account the front crank support on the engine.

I'm a retired 5th grade teacher, not a retired Boeing engineer.

To cite a trite expression, and a lot of epoxy glue, "It is, what it is." And, it's probably better than no cross support.
