A friend put this on his monster truck, theres a sensor that mounts to the drive shaft and you have to set it for the rotations of engine and wheels, and that. It was pretty accurate, its got a hour meter on it as well, and total elaps time.

I never thought about it on the boat. i dont know if the pick up board would hold up well with the water.

One of the guys in the Adelaide (Aus) club has one, basically it just measure's RPM and calulates the speed from that once you calibrate it. So really you are better off with just a tach. One hop and it will give an improper reading. Plus you first have to know your top speed to calibrate it and it doesn't take into consideration prop slip, a very important part of dialing in a prop! :eek:
