I recently purchased a couple of speedmaster struts - 3/16 and 1/4 shaft sizes and also Speedmaster's brass strut bushing's to suit,

But found when sleeving the bush inside the strut with the appropiate K&S brass , the struts are very tight and may need reeming, is this normal, as with struts like the CMD's, there is no need to do this.

Or is it a case of - speedmaster struts only being designed for the older lead teflon bushing's, rather than the more modern brass bush in a sleeve

any info would be greatly appreciated , as I dont want to ream out the strut if there is a better way

yes, i have had MANY problems with these struts.you have to ream them out a little or the brass tubing will gall up some.,mike.PS,wish ross at S/M would fix this problem.

If you turn the bushing around see if its the collar thats making it tight and not the tubing.Just lap in till free, use grease installing, no problem.

If you want the bushing dia I have pm me. Thanks Kevin!!

tim, every stuffing box tubing from k&n(not the bushing itself) is always tight.could you tell me what size reamer is used to correct this? thanks, mike.

Thanks guys, I thought that was the case, Its seems only to be a problem with the speedmaster struts, CMD and Aeromarine seem fine

My speedmaster struts brass loaded with a firm push no issues  got mine from south river rc. More than likely your brass stuffing tube is whats irregular.

These are the measurements I have

Stuffing Tube K&S Brand..... 1/4" x 0.14 Wall or .220" ID (-.002) ( As you can see like, Jim stated there is a tolerance variation right there.) Ok Next

Bushing(whatever brand)... 7/32"od or (0.219")

It is the wall thicknesses of the stuffing tube that are variable, OD seems fine.

So you stuffing tube needs to be a Min of .220" for a bushing to work first time.

Michael,

You can make the end of 7/32" drill bit into a reamer.

I wouldnt do that coz if you go over you cant come back. Id take the brass "LIGHTLY" chuck it in a dril and spinn the bushings and stuffin boxes with 220-320 grit until the will load in firmly. Just my .02. You dont want to use a drill bit for "reaming" youd want to use a reamer for that plus if you make it too big youll have play - introducing a bunch of other issues. Are you in fact holding true speedmaster brass or brass that came from somewhere else?????? When i got mine they came with the correct brass and I had zero issues. No way Im special so...... Ive been down your road before with a non speedmaster strun on another boat and oh lord did it only create a mess when I called myself reaming it without a reamer to add.

i talked to the guys at speedmaster about the brass tubeing also and they said the brass tubbing is not all that great sometimes on outerdia. so just sand the brass and slid it in...works great
