last sunday at the lake i got a radar reading on my 21 sport hydro and my shooter, i'm very disapointed in the numbers. they say that speed kills but these speeds aren't going to hurt anybody.on the shooter i got clocked at 60mph on the 21 a mere 32 mph. what knids of speeds you guys who run 21 sport hydros are seeing? what can i do to get the speeds up? HELP!!

Hey Lay:

Give use some info on your setups. I know a 40 hydro running a 1655 or 1657 with a 9.5 - 10" pipe should run in the low to mid 70's.

Lay,

It has to be in your setup,I know most of the propellers are what others

are using with good results. I would buy a digital level if you don't already

have one and check your sponson angles. I would guess that your boats

are stuck to the water instead of flying though the air. Setup takes a lot

of time and knowledge along the way. Good stock or modified motors

should get you up to speed, but the biggest gains are in SETUP and PROPELLERS.

Thanks,

Mark Sholund

Also, you can't believe all the speeds people tell you they are running.. Unless it's radar confirmed, it's just baloney..

Many guys with 21 hydros think they are running 70+ until they see one running that fast.

you got that right charley!

Yep.....I call that Nitro-induced velocity exaggeration. (B.S. for short)

Just because it's loud and it looks fast doesn’t mean the time between two points is any shorter. :)

Even when your testing and changing props, YOU NEED TO get your speeds checked, I use a GPS, and you will try one prop and you watch the boat go and think its FASTER, It comes in and its SLOWER.

Get a GPS or someone to radar you, and start playing with your set ups.

and see and MAKE NOTES ON ALL adjustments and props and pipe lenghts FOR EVERYTHING.

Try a prop, note speed, lift or lower strut, note speed, if its faster, go higher on strut, make note of speed, start shortening pipe 1/4 inch at a time, note speed, go shorter, note speed.

AND when your done with that prop, start fresh with another prop.

Do the same thing. When you get home, or on the way home, MAKE COPYS OF your notes and keep them somewhere safe.

So you can fall back on it, Speed just dont come to the boat, you have to take the boat to it.

TEST TEST TEST TEST TEST, and MORE TESTING.

That is so true.

I was testing with Frank Orlic last Friday and he was running tank after tank in his 21 hydro and he was consistently just shy of 80 mph.

The best thing was that he wasn't even working on top speed he was playing with something else.

I would say a little more work (another five miles or so)and you will be as competetive as most , there will always be the exceptions just concentrate on driving your a$$ off.

If your speeds are that well, Become the better driver, Do lap after lap after lap, learn to cut them bouys, The fastest boat dont always win.

It takes alot of water time to get both.

Hobby lies, What ever anyone tells you and it seams unreal it probly is. What ever people say gest - 10 to 15 mph. My two cents only. unless you are there to see it with a good radar gun witch we use all the time. The fastest tunnel we guned at celina last year was only 45 mph in race conditions. Thats preaty fast to me.

Thanks alot guys the replys were good info. the setups are as follows. on the 21 the prop was a x440/3 with a nova rossi 21, ops 3280 pipe cut to 3" from center of the motor to weld in pipe. since this boat is a shovel nose the strutt is set @about 1" deep. the shooter was all trimmed out by the previous owner he know what he's doing, his recomendation to me was ops 60 pipe cut to 9 3/4 running a black head picco 45 exr and a 1460 prop cut to 57mm. all i did in terms of setup with the shooter was drop in my motor and put on the prop/pipe. any thoughts?????? one note on the crapshooter, when it's on the pipe it's riding on the tips of the sponson bottom.

Just a question to add to this on the sponson angles(riding surfaces). On my .90 boat I've been playing with different props, some small prop mods and a few pipes. I was wondering if it's worth shimming up the angle some more on the sponsons as well,it's riding very very stable at present but I'm looking for some more speed. Is there much to be found, (speed), in doing this? The other thing that may come into this is the extra portion of the sponsons that hang over the actual riding surface at the back of them, this is going to get closer and closer to the water surface the more I shim them up at the front. Is this a concern?, am I limited to keeping these parts say 1/4 inch away from the water or can I have them closer?

A radar gun is good for only one thing, hurting somebody's feelings. :D

A guy came down to race and said he was running 75mph. Next thing you know he was being lapped by a true 75 mph boat.
