I am building a new set of sponsons for my Kep's rigger. Am thinking of putting two rows of shingles on the bottom to make a air trap.

I know there have bin threads on this in the past but not much response.

So lets hear it. The good the bad and the ugly.

David,

If you follow Charlie Purdue's method, it will be all good ;)

Don :)

ps I know Charlie posted pics, just don't know where

maybe run a search?

Scott Schneider just finished a gas 'rigger with a shingled JAE-like ski, said that it worked well in the first runs. I don't know how it would work on the fronts though or where it would get into overkill.

I saw Scotts 1st run with the boat. It worked great!

Was looking for some input on the size of the shingles. How much surface to leave between them. Also what to make them out of. Have some real thin phenolic board. Say 1/2' long and 1/2' wide with a 1/2' between them?

David, try the search feature, type in shingles and Charles Perdue, this should answer your question.

Found them too free up all my hydros at this juncture, tho the Fire figher was purpose build with a flat zero dihedral ride surface and set up double row making the tunnel, have placed single row sets on my Whiplash gas and Thunderboat as well.

Thanks for the info every one.

Have seen a couple of different set ups some space the shingles close at the front and some close at the back.

The total amount of space open as compared to the amount coved by the shingles and the depth of the gap are what I have to decide on. Also how much angle to use on the shingles. How fare to go up the ride pad.

So many decisions. I will ponder this for more time than I should.

Any one, help me make my mind up.

David

Well here it is any thoughts before I make it permanent.

I used blocks to get the air trap hight up and small shingles to hold down the attack angle of each shingle.

Well had it out for the first run today. All I can say is WOW It is a new boat. Launched with no problem first time set the needle and the relaunch perfect. Runs up on shore have to get use to the boat gliding so nice, Real light on its feet need to lower the strut. It rides out of the water like a plain flying just above the water. Tried every prop I had in the box at the time H7 no problem. Went threw the lily pads and picked up a large piece of it on the boom tube and it didn't care. Throttles real good comes from off pipe to on pipe with ease.

Haven't leaned it down all the way yet still running the same plug 5 tanks a first for me.

Will let it all hang out tomorrow. Will see what shes got.

The shingles make a difference but the tunnel shingles make a larger difference. Just make sure that you keep all of the shingles VERY sharp. Good work David.

Will be racing it at Tampa race next weekend. Will see if it works in race water. It is a little lite on the sponsons with 3.8 and 4 Deg AOT. Will try some adjustments this weekend to tighten it up. Hooks a little with the turn fin set forward. Dose not need all the leverage to turn now.

Usually the normal AOT ( about 3 degrees) is all that is needed on the sponsons as the shingles, due to there design, have a much steeper AOT but for only a short distance.

With the ledges on the sponsons, made up of the shingles and pad, some time a slightly larger or deeper(I prefer it deeper in heat race water) turn fin is required to prevent the boat from sliding out in the turns and catching on these edges.

Good luck with your boat.

I was out today testing. The water was real rough 2 to 4" 10 to 15 MPH wind. Yes it dose catch a edge and it is harder to keep the fin in the water. Running the top of the sponsons flat. Will try to give it some nose down to keep it in the water and lower the AOA. I can see the longer fin will help.

The boat will pull all the prop I have H7. Pinched it way up with pliers and just keep getting it. Right now I am chasing the setup every time the speed goes up. Will run the H5 at the race to keep the speed down till I catch up with the setup.

I have found that with the carbon tube booms if I put a solid carbon rod all the way threw the boom. It will bite better it calm water but in rough with the rod only in the mid section it runs better in the rough. With different inserts in the tube you can tune the tubes like shocks on a car.

Will save more testing till after the race.

You might find the airtrap works best on calmer water. In 4" chop your boat is in the air most of the time anyway. Maybe a narrower airtrap & sponson? Removable ride pads would be cool for testing.

With the plain ride pads yes, with the shingled ride pads they really like rough water.

As far as the sponson boom tubes, I make them a rigid as I can and make the adjustments elsewhere.
