So that I wouldn't hijack Aaron's thread about twin weights I'm starting this one.

What are folks using to weigh their rides?

Where are some good places to pick up a good scale cheap? (I know good isn't cheap.)

I'm guessing that a capacity of 20 to 25lbs would be more than enough with a resolution of 1 gram?

-Buck-

10,000:1 resolution is pretty fine. A quick survey of commercial scales showed accuracy of 0.5~1% was standard. Desktop digital scales were anywhere from 20000:1 resolution 2000gx0.1g @ $300, 6000gx1g @ $235, 8100gx1g @ $570, 10000gx2g @ $684(remote dsiplay) or $356, to 10lbx0.2oc (0.35oz accuracy, 800:1 resolution) @ $85. The greater the capacity, the less the resolution. The greater the resolution, the greater the price.

You can use a $50 postal scale from walmart to go up to ~15 lbs. I prefer 3 scales on a hydro: one for each sponson, and 1 on the strut. 3ea 3kg food scales should be enough. Also allows you to find your CG both FR-RR and LH-RH, as well as strut weight.

Buck, our local hobby shop carries a nice set of scales. I think they cost in the $20 - $30 range and have a pretty good resolution, but I don't know the capacity. When I find out I will let you know. Maybe you can come down one weekend and we'll do some running and you can pick one up.

Hey Jon,

I found a digital postal scale that looks pretty useable for $39.00.

Max Cap. = 35.2 lbs / 16,000gw/ 0.1oz/2g accuracy up to 2lbs

and

0.2oz/5g accuracy over 2lbs
The accuracy isn't the best but for point of referencing I think it would work.

I though briefly about how useful three scales could be but can't convince myself that it would be useful.

Balance left to right would be next to impossible with the way a rigger is laid out without adding weights.

Front to back balance will constantly change with fuel burn off.

Maybe I'm wrong.

Hey GQ

Let me know what they have.

I figured that you’d have some pretty accurate scales for your little light weight SAW boats. What do the weigh? 500 – 600 grams?

I’d love to come down and run with you guys.

Yes the FR/RR balance will change with fuel burn, but you can set the initial strut weight, and also compare the empty vs full strut weight and CG change. Changing the LH/RH balance does require adding weight, but you might be surprised what you find. Boats can be too light. My philosophy is to build it light, and then put the weight where you want it. The polar moment of Inertia is also important to transient stability.

I have the best scale of all, I live in a very small town (600) and go to the Post Office and use their scale all most as long as I need them.

I have some pics of one from a few years ago at F/E II (I think) that you ran a .12 boat once or twice Glen. I couldn't believe how thin light and tiny it looked at the time to me- but I will always remember how fast it was. ;)

Mind if I post a pic Glen ?

Boy that boat was well used! It is the one Ross make several 80+ mph passes with last year at Speed Week. Too bad we couldn't get two in a row.

Thanks for the picture,

Glenn
