Can anyone tell me which motor is needed for the 1973/4 PAY-N-PAK scale boat. Picture of real boat attached. Is this the merlin or allison motor?

The way to tell a Merlin from an Allison is to look at the front of the valve covers. The Merlin has a bulged up front, while the Allison has a tapered down front with magnitos mounted to the front of the heads. IN 1973, almost all of the top boats(Bud, Atlas, Pay N' Pak, etc) were running Merlins. The only real competitor to run an Allison was the Miss Madison. Something else many don't know about the Pay N' Pak is it actually had a cowling over the engine in 1973. It ran with it only in testing and a couple of race sites till it was removed to make the boat less "flighty". This makes building the boat without the stripes on the cockpit and tails and U-25 on the wing legal with a cowled engine, though many cringe to look at it

You can get plans from Newton Marine for two different Allisons(standard and turbocharged), so you need to know which one your boat had in real life before ordering. Another option might be Larry Kraemer, who at one time had parts kits for 1/8th scale engines. Both are listed in the NAMBA Master Hull Roster
