I'm building my second JAE 21 and have a rudder that sure seems too small. It will only be 1.375" below the ski. Is this enough?

Thanks.

Not an expert but have asked this same question to the JAE crew and I was told 2" below ski
That's what I had thought. It might be a Zippkit 12 rudder, but I was told it was a .21 rudder. I know not much is needed to turn these boats, but rudder depth might be needed to combat prop walk.....

my jae 21 came with the rudder in the hardware kit. It sits 1.5" below the ski bottom and works good, stock mtr, keep 21 running in the low 60's.

I put a SpeedMaster Mini rudder on mine and was worried it was not enough. It is 1-5/8" below the ski. Turns on a dime.

In my experience the rudder doesn't make it turn, the turn fin does.

The rudder makes stop turning, and go straight...

Too little rudder will promote a lot of prop walk - something has to hold the transom in place against the force of the paddle wheel. Plus the rudder has to be matched to the turn fin. Too little turn fin compared to the rudder and the boat will hook badly. They both have to work together, one is not less important than the other.

Craig,

what is the length? I will compare it to mine that I just got.

I asked Joe about mounting as I was concered with rudder depth as well. I can forward you his response if it will help.

Cant wait for Spring, but at this rate, it will be June before all of the ice melts!

Craig,

thats the one I have as well. I will forward you what Joe P. sent me on mounting. After mounting mine, it sits 1-9/16'' below the ski.

Craig, my rudder sits 1 5/8" below the ski. the rudder is a j. solinger one provided by joe for the first run of .21 kits. i do know john knight tried shortening the rudders (he went thru a few) on his, & had issues. he ended up running a rudder at full length. these boats don't seem to like shorter rudders, 1 1/2" below the ski seems to be the minimum.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like the rudder on my current JAE 21 is longer than it needs to be at a full 2" below the ski. I should shorten that to gain more speed for that boat. It will be my backup 20 rigger.

For the new 20 rigger, I will use the rudder pictured and run it at 1.5" below the ski.
