anyone have this engine in a rigger . I have a firefighter 21 set up as suggested by Tom, I have run engine up on stand with prop and it runs good . When I run it in the rigger it always dies about 5-10 second after launch. I tried hot medium and cold plugs to no avail. I use 50% fuel which runs fine in my cmb 45 bullit. I have tried prather 220 , oct 1445 and 1440 none will get boat on plane.Pipe is at about 8-1/2". Only thing I can think is pipe to long ?

almost forgot to mention, I measured head clearance @ 14 thou. Seems like to much, could this be the problem ?

Engine should not sound all that good on the stand. Should sound blubbering fat. Try richening it up some. If the throttle is crisp on the stand it will die

when the prop load hits the water.

Exactly!!

You're running a boat now, the tuning is different than planes or cars.

A totally different animal.

Fatten that thing up and ENJOY!!

I found the problem. I took Brad Christy's advice about the head clearance. I checked the engine and it was 13 thou not including an 8 thou shim, way to much. Set it at 6 thou and now boat runs great still on rich side of needle.

was this a new engine when you started running it?

The Rossi's take a while to break in as you'll find, a good gallon or more of fuel before they really hit their stride so you may find yourself going to a bigger prop once it's rolling. They seem to like a longer pipe also but 8-1/2" should be right in the neighborhood.

Just measured mine and she was the same, if you don't mind me asking, how did you drop down to 6 thou without the shim?? Did you machine the liner??

Curious cause I gotta do the same to mine

Ahhhh just worked it out, I can either machine the liner, or the head button to obtain the desired result....................that's why I love this site, packed full of great info

machine down the head. You will love the result !

I have the same issue. runs good with air prop but once in the boat it will not respond to throttle and die when in the water. Acts lean on stand and way too fat in the water. Trid all kinds of propos big and small no luck. I I read all this correctly lower head clearence to 6 tou and use 3 blade prop. Most of the gys at the pond tell to to go to OS max card. Can you advsie.

Once broken in, mine really liked the Prather 220. While breaking in I used smaller props like the Octura X-440/3.

Ignore the above. I didn't look at the specifice use for the boat as I took it from a subsription.
