Last night while driving back from Iowa we were robbed while getting gas at a Pilot truck stop on I55 in Missouri. I was using the bathroom and my wife was putting gas in the truck and the guy drove up and opened the passenger door and took my wife's purse while she was filling the truck.

He must have been sitting back and watching and moved at the exact time.

Be aware of your surroundings when at these large gas stations/truck stops. They seem safe and lighted well and it is easy to get complacent.

We boaters are often traveling late Sunday nights from races, tired and it is easy to drop your awareness guard.

I have travelled many places in the World and never robbed. Only in America. It is a sad commentary on what is happening in this country.

Now to the shop to paint a boat.

Dang Doc, sorry to hear that, thankfully its things that can be replaced and no one was hurt.

Your dead on , its a sad day and age when you have to be aware of things like this no matter where you are.

Back in 1986, I was travelling from Flint MI to Seattle and had stopped at one of the Illinois rest areas that had gas, a motel and restaurant. In the time it took me to use a rest room and get something to eat, my car was jacked up on the right side and part of the lug nuts removed. Had the guy trying to strip my car broke the nuts loose BEFORE jacking the car, he might have gotten the tires and wheels off and been long gone. As it turned out, he was still working at it when I got back to the car and didn't know I was there until a leaded pipe I carried came down across his back in view of a local police officer. Once I proved the car was mine, the officer made him reinstall the lug nuts and lower the car before arresting him. I didn't drive back to the Midwest for 24 years after that, going back to Michigan in 2010 and a year later to Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky without incident on either trip. Had the same thing happened two years ago, I probably would have been the one arrested, being charged with assault, the way things are in this country today

That sucks Doc, did you file a police report? :(

whats nice about this day &age is everything is on camera, I bet the videotape has this guy and the police can come up with a plate # or something. there are cameras all over the place at those stops

Doc - glad that you and your wife were not hurt. It's a sad example of how some in our society live their lives. We will certainly be more aware of our surroundings when traveling in the future.

The police were great. They did get it on the video surveillance. I doubt they catch him. It sure could have been worse. They could have injured my wife and stole the truck. So we were blessed. Just a hassle replacing keys, stopping various accounts and credit cards.

Thankfully you were not hurt. A friend of mine was a logger in Nortwestern Montana. One night at a convenience store he saw a fellow trying to get into a young woiman's car. She was filling up with gas. The logger walked over and dropped the fellow. The young woman said "thanks" and drove off. The police visited my friend and told him he was in trouble. He asked the police where they were when the woman needed help. The police dropped the subject.

It's getting worse for sure.. I have traveled alot also.. I but I can tell you that it's actually alot worse other places. Been to Brazil or Eastern Europe lately? We won't even talk about the Middle East..

If we the poeple would not give the government the soul responsability to defend us then we would all still be able to carry guns, and take care of the problem our selfs. you wouldn't have this going on, because the criminals would be afraid of the law abidding citizen. the other reason you got robbed is where you were. States Like IL, CA MD, and almost all northestern state do not embrace the constitution as our rule of law. they embrace socialisam, progressive top down all powerful centralized athoritarian government. you think things a bad know, Just wait till they pass the new amnisty bill that is being rammed through by our leaders that work for us. our society will really crumble at an increasing rate. Glade to hear you are all ok.

Yes,.. changed alot.. My company right now has a travel BAN for Egypt.. And I agree with the immigration statement. We see how bold they are now to tell us they deserve the rights of the US citizen,, with none of the cost or responsibility. Wait until they are no longer illegal.. IF they pass that,.. I will be applying for my conceal and carry permit immediately. It will be just like Juarez mexico right here in Charlotte NC.. SO many illegal criminal ARE HIDING IN THE SHADOWS,.. when we give then the ability to come out.. I cannot image what is going to happen..

Why wait for your C/C permit? Better to have a permit now, even if you elect not to carry. I know folks that have several handguns on their person at all times, and a loaded AR in their vehicle.......One is enough for me. But you should not carry if you any hesitation about using it if necessary. ANd be ready to be sued if you do use it; just the nature of our society. Know your local laws and act apprpriately.
