A friend of mine laid up a cowl mould for me from my plug using tooling gel and glass mat etc. The mould came out GREAT, but there are 2 tiny pin holes that I can feel with my finger nail in the transition from the cowl "bump" to the flat plate of the cowl. I would like to know, what material I can use to fix these, and any cautions to be aware of. I was thinking either a west systems/colloidal/graphite mix, or some part automotive spot putty? Appreciate any help thanks Tony J

Two solutions come to mind. If the mold is just going to be used for a couple of parts a year it would probalby just be easiest to put a little wax in the pin hole each use.

The way to fix the mold is going to be to fill the hole with gel coat and sand it down to match. Any good marine store will have patch gel coat in small containers. I like to use a color that contrasts the mold color so I can see it to sand easier.

use a pick of some sort and rough up the inside of the hole(you may find that the tiny hole is actually a void hidden by the gel coat). Apply gel coat to the area to be repaired. Bloch the repair with 600 grit wet paper. sand the entire mold with wet paper working down to 1000 grit , polish the mold and apply wax. This will provide the best surface quality.

Tony, go over to the Sport/Scale forum. Phil Thomas has a posting over there that is just what you're looking for.

Mark Thanks for the info I will try the wax and see how the parts pull.

Ron this is the actual mold not the pulled parts that Phil was talking about.

Tony, If this is just a small pin hole in the mold try filling it with medium ca and hitting it with kicker, let it setup for a bit and then use a flat scraper to cut off the bump of ca glue.

Just dont scratch up your surface. I use a slighlty dulled exacto flat chisel tip, the one that is about 1/2 inch wide, to repair holes like this on molds and parts.

OR If it is just a one or two time use thing you can use some modeling clay to fill the hole.

Any pin holes in the molds will be a bump on the part which can be cut or sanded off.
