On the average inboard, (mono, outrigger, sport hydro, etc) What sort of distance from the collet to the stuffing tube is considered to be safe and reasonable in your opinion?
Obviously, enough is needed to loosen the thread on the collet and remove the flex shaft where necessary. Interested in what formula others are using20200203_083336.jpg

Just enough to get the belt out. This is more than others have mentioned, but I saw a boater with about 1” or 1 1/4” and the flex shaft whipped and got wildly loose and tore the stuffing box to threads. I have seen the end of people’s tubes be flared looking when they had a bigger gap than I’ve used also.
