Guys,

i am looking for a new radio...too many boats to use the old JR XR-2 its annoying to keep re-setting the models

Conditions are it has to have at least 5 model memory, be a wheel radio and price (around $200us) doesnt have to be FM

the Futaba T2PL fits the bill

so does the Airtronics MX-3

What do you guys think, are there any others

Thanks Fellas

Kris

Kris,

Buy a 3 channel radio - if you buy a 2 channel and later decide to run mixture control you will have to get another radio again.

Either JR or Futaba will serve you well.

Tim.

The Futaba 3PK has a good 3rd channel, but is not a cheap radio.

My other radio is a JR R1, which is also quite good.

Both have lots of memories, FM, and PCM.

Nitrocrazed racing: 3rd channel is for tabs. :p

If memory serves,

Someone had a 40MHZ (I think that's legal for you guys) Futaba 3pjs for sale recently. You can pick it up pretty cheap and it has almost all the features of the 3pk without the High-Response and high cost. That is a great radio and you can use someone's 75mhz module here in the U.S. someday.

I've got the Hitec lynx on 40mhz with a futaba PCM1024 RX on channel 63. Radio has 10 model memory. If interested send me an e mail [email protected] I'll sell it very very reasonable. I have three other Futabas that I use.

Bill

oops, mine has 10

I lucked out and got Gary's Futaba T3PDF Magnum, great radio w/10 model memory. All my other radio's I moved over to are JR FM 3 model memories. The third channel feature is there only drawback. Gotta say the best third channel needle was the Futaba Magnum Senior, it had a knob and the ever cool warm up switch.

I'll second that - wish I still had mine. The warm up was cool for impersonating Mazda rotaries

Kris,

Keep in mind the US Radios run different frequencies, so Airtronics (unless you want 27Mhz) is out. Dont mail order any radio gear from overseas especially the US because you probably wont be able to use it here.

I had an airtronics radio, and it worked pretty solid until some crackhead boosted it. I wish they weren't wired bass-ackwards though. I smoked up 2 servos and an RC hydros speed control because I got them second hand and without checking, I a$$umed the wiring was standard like the other manufacturers. An expensive lesson learned at the school of hard knocks.

the futaba 3pjs pcm has been a great radio for me. JR's are popular as well. Go with a 3 channel

How soon do you have to have it?

I have a collection of JR 756 pcm's, 3 channel wheel radios. Soon I will be trying to sell off 2 of them, I just have to figure out which ones. I too have a Hitec Lynx 3 D on 27, good play radio but I wouldn't race with it. ;)

AHHH, my favourite topic........

Kris, as you know I have an XS-3 radio which I bought off an E-bay shop (if that makes any difference) in Hong Kong. I unfortunately had problems with it and to cut to the chase, JR Australia will not honor the warranty on a unit that has been purchased outside the country. What I was told was that I would need to send it to JR Japan in order for the warranty to be honored.....by the time I paid for return shipping I might of well as paid for the repair locally, which I have chosen to do.

I don't know whether or not I've been fed a load of BS, but that's the way it goes.

I'm not rubbishing JR or any other manufacturer for that matter - just sharing an experience that I have had, which, has left a very sour taste in my mouth, hole in my wallet and boat out of the water! :(

Guys,

Appreciate the answers.

Tim, i dont think i will use a third channel...but yeah, you never know :)

Craig, i understand what you are saying...i will make sure i get the feq. that we use here in Aus!

Mike, i dont need it RIGHT away, i can live with my XR-2 for now, but when i get all my boats going, it will be a pain in the a$$ :) let me know where ican find some details o nthe radios you have ;)

Hi Guys

Airtronics (AKA SANWA) can be had on 29MHz in Oz - ask how I know? They have changed the connector type but can't remember about the polarity.

Mike - you wouldn't race with a Lynx 3D - why not? I have a couple of these on 29Mhz

I personnally like JR and Futaba gear also especially for helis - some times for boats thought there are way to many bells and whistles.

I totally recommend going FM it simply is better. More model memory is not always better. Feel of the radio in your hand and comfort of grip is probably more important. Bottom line heaps of choice just pay your money and take your chance.

Note of caution a lot of radios bought in by people are not legal for use in Oz - including out of the asian market. If you want to shut a run sight down real quick just have a federal radio inspector drop by unannounced. You'd be amazed how quickly you can discover what you can't use here.

GT

Kris,

As you can see from the other posts, probably best to buy a Radio here so you have the warranty... 3rd channel is also a good idea to get right now even if you dont plan to use it immediately coz you probably will eventually and if you are investing in model memory then you will probably get third channel (or more) anyway.

I have had a JR 388 stick radio for over 10 years (8 memories 8 channels) and it has been totally reliable. I have recently bought an R1 (3 channel 10 memory) but I have only used it on my twin so far so I dont have a good feel for it yet. The push button incremental third channel can be a pain though...

When checking the price of the units also check how much Receivers are as well because a cheaper initial cost may lead you to more expense as you add boats.

EMS Racing Now I have added boats!!!!
