I need to seal a new deck, need some input on what works. New treated lumber put up in May and I want to get something on it before cold weather hits. I'm in NC and we have had an average wet and humid summer, but dry just lately and the wood seems ready to soak in some sealer/stain. I've used lots of different stuff and haven't been impressed with any of it. I'd like to find something that will stay in place for several years. I'm thinking of an oil base that could be color tinted. Any suggestions, something that has really worked well for you?

Mike,

We just built a new deck in April, and everybody is telling me to wait a year before sealing/staining.

Thanks. Brad.

I've heard that too, but the builder said we should get something on it, and for what it cost I'd like to see it last a long time.

I used what Ray posted and it's been on my shed for 6 years and still looks good.I brushed my on and that way you can get it in the cracks.

thanks, Dave. I've seen that stuff in Lowe's, I need to stop by and check it out.

A roller also works very good with this stain. It seems to put down a much heavier coat for deeper penetration. Just roll it slow or it will sling a lot of the sealer off the roller . You and everything around you will have freckles.

Ask me how I know

Depends on the type of exposure it will get. In the sun, shade, damp atea. Usually best to wait 6 months to a year before staining. Let the sun burn off some of the chemicals its soaked in.
