Phil Thomas 8700 Smokin’Joe’s Owners?

Hi All,

I have this hull now in primer and am trying to finalize a version and find correct pics for paint and decals. I searched and found several threads discussing the many versions with different shoes etc. but it’s hard to make sense of. I do prefer to not have the “Total” decal if I have any choice with this particular hull. It looks out-of-place to me.

Hoping someone more knowledgeable can point me the right direction. This is my first 1:8 scale thanks!

Newton plans are generic and will not give you what you are looking for in terms of sub sponsors (like Total) For Phil's hull you want to look for versions of the 1994 Joe's. Smaller sub sponsors changed race to race. I've done all 3 years of the SJ versions, here's a link to the '94 I did back in fall of 2004, I patterned it after the Seafair race right after it won the Gold Cup-

I remember looking at that gallery years ago but couldn't find it again. Perfect version. Shoes look correct to a PT hull, no Total, no funky white and black colors underneath. My turbine exhaust length matches as do my fins I filled in the notched back corners of. Thanks much!

The white bottom was 1995. The '96 boat changed a lot....
