Hey guys, I have a 20 year old OPS 45, I had this in a rigger that I crached into a sea wall at full throttle and totaled the boat. The engine has barly 2 tanks through it and I am finished up a new Betke 40 I plan to put it in. I have been told the motor is no longer competitive but I could update it with the newer piston, sleeve and drum rotor. This would do the trick. This will cost about $180 to upgrade. Anybody have experience with this motor and it whether this is the rocemmended route. Or shall I pitch it and buy a new CMB, Picco or ?.

Ken,

Sell the OPS to a sport boater, add some money to that and buy a new engine. You'll be $$ and perfomance ahead.

Ken, If you are going to get into racing, I would upgrade.

You should get with me about upgrading the boat as well since it was new 20 years ago. Lots of changes since then.

Ken , is that the boat that the damaged SS props are for you drop off 20 years ago?

Hi Mike,

Just got off the phone with your dad, I went to the winternats down here last week - great show!

Mike, I am back into racing big time, I moved to new york and I do not have the distractions of the boat and cottege so I have been racing. NAMBA dominates NJ and NY. The 40 I am finished I bought at one of the OWMBC club meetings. You guys must have donated it for some event and who ever won it sold it to me. It sat all this time unfinished but I got to it this past spring. Still had your specs. I also am still running the 20 that was your boat and the 67 you built for me when I was living in germany. These boats are in excellent shape as they have been decommissioned for for 15 years. The 20 and 67 were hard shaft boats and I converted them to flex drives. It made a big difference with the 67 as I was able to lighten up the front end and it runs strong, new powerhouse would help that but the 67 was worked on and has good compression. The guys here in NJ made lots of comments about the handeling of the boat, thought it ran very well and was fast. Still has an OPS 67 but it has been respectable even against the gas and 80 and 90 I face in the open class. Less nitro guys out here so we end up combining classes. I plan to sell the OPS 45 even though its practically new.

If you have any suggestions about what to dd in terms of upgrade please advsie. This hull is painted so I probably do not want to start major hull work but I am curious. Perhaps you are suggesting a new boat? Are you still building them?

And John, the props I referred to were off a twin Eagle I bough from the Pas boys. I was obviously just kidding but I really did send you the props.

Ken,

I got your picture on the PM you sent me. Nice looking paint job. If my memory serves me right, that boat probably does not have a rubber mount for the motor. I would look into doing that. Also, the sponsons have changed and that would be a good upgrade. I will send you back a PM with more specifics.

I am not making boats to sell anymore. I have a hard enough time building one for myself anymore. I might be able to help you out with some sponsons or something though. My dad is retired now and does most of the building. He has a couple of new 20 boats hanging in the basement that he might be interested in selling.

Mike, you are right it has engine mount blocks, but they are glued in so I do not want to remove them, not sure it s that much advantage, perhaps weight. I am interested in sponson upgrades if you can help. I am sure its the newest and oldest kit from your building days. I thought I would run the OPS 45 till I break something and then buy a new motor. No decent offers for this old powerhouse that is essentially new. I sure guys do not trust my claims. I appreciate the help.

Ken
