If I made a gearbox to couple 2 Mac 84's together on a shaft that ran between the 2 engines with a wet sump and lube from thin oil like auto trans fluid, would carbon steel gears with a pitch of 1.0mm and face width of 8mm and a pressure angle of 20 degrees be sufficient to do the job? I was thinking of a 32:20 ratio. 32 on the engines and 20 on the prop shaft.

BTW, Ian I will be hauling cars to and from Adelaide probably in the next 3 or 4 weeks so I will most likely be able to meet up at a race meeting sometime in the future. I'll be sure to bring my boat. That pond you guys race at looks great.

Mark,

I doubt the gears would last! The power and shock loadings would be horrendous! I would think polished hardened gears might do the trick! But stick with one motor for now. B)

Our next oval race is on May 30, you are welcome to drop by!

Ian.

Carbon steel would need something in the area of 25mm. John Bridge built dozens of these with F engines. He refined them to work great with onboard ignition..

Ian,

Unfortunately I already have other work commitments for that weekend so I can't make it. When's your next meet?

Is the 20 degree pressure angle and 1.0mm pitch sufficient for the job if I play around with the face width?

Mark,

June 27 would be the next meet after that.

I haven't done gear design for a while, but I did a bit of research a while ago and it is a very complicated area. I cant really give you any advice.

Ian.
