Is base coat clear coat the only nitro proof automotive style paint solution.

or is there another product that will give a nice shine and protection from the nitro fuel.

I have aguy that will paint my boat free if i but the paint but he does not have much experience with clearcoat. ;)

thanks

I agree to some extent with Chris, I have used Base/Clear and Klass and the Klass is so easy to use and seems to hold up great.

Several of the auto paints are fuel proof with just the base color, so if you've got a guy who can do a good job, and is free, that is an option. One example that's not too pricey is PPG Omni MAE, which is a two part acrylic enamel. As has been stated, Klass Kote is also an option. A big advantage of the car paints is the dealer can mix up hundreds of different colors using known formulas. You can thumb through their books, find the color(s) you like, and they'll mix them for you. You can certainly do this with Klass Kote, but there aren't so many formulas out there.

If your paint guy is familiar with two part auto paints, he should be able to figure out Klasskote pretty easily. I did the base color of my Whiplash with Klasskote last week. It was very easy to use and came out pretty well. I plan to put trim colors and graphics on it early next week.

try this http://www.fascoepoxies.com/ I am using the 50WR it reduces with water and will clean up with water be for it sets not to many colors but it is a true epoxy ,I am using it to cover my wood boat inside and out. also have a epoxy with micro bubbles in it that is light as a feather.

here ya go.. this stuff is bullet proof and shoots NICE. and you don't have to buy a ton of it.

Chris,

I will be spraying KlassKote for the first time in the next few weeks and I was wondering what type of sprayer I should use. I have an HVLP with a 1.4mm nozzle. Will that give me the best results? Also, I bought a quart of primer, a quart of catalyst and a quart of reducer. What's the best mixture ratio to use? I was assuming I should use 1 part of each. Any help would be great. I've been told by many people that this KlassKote is the best paint out there I can't wait to see the results! Oh and I'll be spraying in florida where the temp is about 90 degrees.

To me there no such thing as a bullet proff paint. all can get messed up. Ok what the big deal about KlassKote paints?? To me there more costly then automotive paints plus you have to pay shipping charges and maybe hazerdious shipping on that stuff too. I use the Duponts NASON and the NAPA's Crossfire system. Both are great paint systems and easy on you wallet too. To get a smooth paint finishes? I use a HVLP gravityfeed gun with a 1.3 tip, lays out like glass!!

I chose KlassKote instead of auto paints for one simple reason, KlassKote does not contain isocyanates. For those of us who do not have the facilities, equipment, and training to use paints containing this highly toxic compound, KlassKote is a safer alternative.

Not to answer for Chris but yes 1 to 1 to 1. The HVLP with the 1.4mm tip will spray great. I used a 1.3mm tip on my last boat and it would have been better with the 1.4mm. I don't think Klass is the best paint but for me it is much easier to spray than base and clear.

I used Klasskote last week for the first time. I have not done much painting and both boats turned out great.

Bob

Single stage PPG, Absolutely resists nitro. I spray it in the motor and tank compartment. Seal the would with West or something similair and you can spray the color as the primer and color. Spray a coat and sand and spray again and if need be sand and spray again. That is all you have to do.

For extra gloss and multiple colors I spray with PPG clear. GTT

I dont have a paint booth!! I work out of a big poll garage. As long as you have a good paint resperator. As for trainning?? The two paint systems I'd mentioned are easy to use. Even a monkey can do it. If you'd sprayed the KlassKote you can spray this stuff.Plus if you use a gravityfeed HVLP gun the overspray&fumes are very low.But I forgot you guys have money to burn!

The training I spoke of is also from a safety perspective. In researching paints I read enough about the 2 part auto paints to decide I really didn't want to expose myself to the hazards. I want stay healthy enough to see my girls grow up...

So easy a Caveman can do it.  Miss, the sparks from your axe grinding will cause an explosion and burn up your money too. :D :D It's all good. B) B)

i think the main thing with klass cote is.. i had a boat painted by a PRO painter. using supposed high quaility auto motive paint.

first time i run it the paint PEEL off down to the primer. again this is by a guy that paints ALOT OF BOATS for people.

so that is why i stick with a epoxy based paint. look at it this way.. you build a boat with epoxy right? so you know epoxy paint will hold up.

as far as the gun tip. i shot paint with a 1.0 and i worked fine. depends on the gun more than anything.

primer i shot with a 1.2

Thanks for the tips and suggestions. I think I've got the right idea so far. One thing I've been struggling with is painting graphics, mainly large lettering. I usually go to my local sign shop and have them print out negative vinyl lettering and use that as my stencil. On my current project the lettering has three colors with one base color then two succeeding outlines in different colors. I haven't yet figured out how I plan to stencil and paint the lettering. Any suggestions?

One thing that I cannot stress enough is that you make sure ALL holes are drilled and sealed BEFORE you start any primer or paint work. This is especially crucial on wood boats like riggers and hydros/scales. If you drill things like your water drain holes after you've sealed the boat you open up the end grain to the oils/ fuel & the paint will come off especially if you use a basecoat/clearcoat paint. I can't tell you how many times I've seen nice paint jobs on riggers or wood scale hulls start coming off originating at the drain holes & this is exactly why it happens. If you have ever seen wood hulls that are just sealed/cleared & not painted with dark lines in the wood grain running out from holes drilled it is because they were not totally sealed & you are seeing fuel & oil residuals wicking up through the wood grain. This actually is a difficult thing to seal & keep sealed as the wood flexes and can open up the grain at the edges formed by the holes. I have tried various methods to sealing these areas and settled on using thin CA and a Q-tip or toothpick to completely soak all exposed edges of any holes drilled. Then I'll sand the edges lightly & do it again. This is followed by another light sanding then the sealing as usual with epoxy, primer & paint. So far it seems to be working out well, hope this helps. :)

A question regarding the primer, How much paint should I mix up to cover a sport 20 hull? I only pruchased a quart of each part. I was hoping that would give me enough paint to prime my sport 20, sport 40 and my GX1 hydro?

The guy didn't prep it right!! thats why the paint came off of your boat!!! I'd aways sand my boats with 400 then seal it then paint them with no problems. Most shop are using urethane paints and Also like Don Ferrette said about the holes too prep them right! Epoxys I use on car frames and wheel wells because of rocks&stones hits. Tampa mix a half of pint of sprayable paint, that should cover your boat if your using an HVLP gravityfeed gun. piper chuck,The automotive paints are more safer to use now these days compaired to the paints in the 60-80's. The worst paints are the imrons and epoxys that has more harsher chemicals then urethanes.
