i was just wondering what type of maintenance people do on their nitro motors when they are done running them. i have .12 motors running in riggers and several OB's. i know about the shaft maintenance but was wondering what is being done to the motors themselves when putting them away. at this point i have been flushing with fresh water, spraying them with WD40 and circulating after run oil throughout the motor then just storing them with the piston in BDC. i havent had any problems but i want to do what i can to keep the bearings in good shape. one of my OS OB's seems to get tight after sitting, it seems as if the bearings are locking up so i have to turn it over everyday in fear that it will ruin the bearings..

also how often should i be taking the motor apart and inspecting the insides?

ps: i run in salt water..

thanks for the tips.

Hello Chuck, my .21 size motors get new bearings after 2gallons of fuel. The key is to change bearings before they go bad. Very important on crank rotor motors like Novarossi, OS, k&B etc. Crank window and case seal can last along time if bearings on these type engines are changed before the bearings go bad. I would recommend that after flushing water jackets with fresh water, you spray a good shot of WD-40 or similar into waterjacket fitting, so head bolts dont seize. PTO bearings could be bad in the OS ob you mentioned? Hope this helps. Richard D

Ouch, On the salt water. Keep radio box dry, its not if, but when radio starts having problems. as far as the motor, I'd flush corrion X and a light machine oil every use. I tear My motors down every 2 gallons, or if it starts eatting plugs, or stopping for no reason. The salt water Is your main issue, WOW, I'm really not to sure what to answer on that ! I'm an old school and stay far away from salt water. BUT Ya gotta run where ya can. Good luck !

i would not run in salt water but if you have to i would.

tear the engine down

clean and lubricate every individual part

use corrosion X and then Marvel mistery oil to store the engines

i plug the exaust and put marvel mistery oil in the carb turn it a few times and the plug the carb and i have had no issuies as of yet.take your servos and pray some corrotion X on them also and wipe very very clean your radio box same wih reciever ok.

thats what i do after run and then store im currently deployed so i had to do that with every engine i own even the one i just shipped to you the rossi golhead OB.

I have a few boats that i used to run in salt water , not my race stuff but play boats and the only real success will come with first rinsing with fresh water then doing the full flush with a glow plug flushout device for a light oil flush , draining the pipe for each flush , at least two ...then the protectant oil flush at least twice . You have to flush out behind the flywheel and I would run stainless water jacket screws as well . It's a total pain in the keester but if you don't , your stuff will be junk quick . I would really recommend removing the motor , hand oiling it, blowing out the water passages and bag it .

In the event of dunking it dissassembly is in order .

If the bearings are getting tight they are hurt already.
