Figured with all the tunnel stuff being discussed, we may as well get this one on the table while the Iron is Hot - so to speak.

We can start another thread and argue over the rules later- should take us well into Winter so you Northern guys have something to do as well

Pop Pop Stock Production will be first, once we have beaten that thread to a pulp and run any new interest away , we can move on to the Multi Candle classes.

I can think of a couple dedicated "Rule Mongors" that would love to write the rules for this class.

Dont even get me started on using Olive Oil and different heat sources, oh and then there will be the National rules and Saws Rules debates. The only upside is -

No Outboards, as it would blow out the heat source

IMPBA does have a steam class already. The SAW record is around 9 mph. A real steam powered hydro should be able to add around 100 mph to that. However, it will be a lot tougher than setting gas or nitro records. For a start, everything but screws and bearings is made from scratch. A control system would be needed for RC. Then, the power plants are notoriously cranky. See

The boiler & combustion chamber are finished. The cylinder block is assembled on a Zenoah crankcase. The cylinder liner is in the lathe waiting to be rough bored. Then off to the mill for ports and bolt holes and back for bore grinding. The piston and dykes ring are next.

The hard parts will be the variable valve gear and variable water pump. I have the designs, but there's a lot of work (and scrap) between an idea and a working prototype. Then comes breadboarding the whole power plant for dyno testing. I would be surprised if I get to that stage by next summer. A quick acting control system is the biggest issue. Fortunately we have very low cost computers (Arduino, Rasberry Pi) that can handle monotube boiler issues better than the mechanical systems used in the past.

Below are the boiler and combustion chamber pictures. The combustion chamber is similar to model turbine combustion chambers with an electric ducted fan blower. It's really impressive on propane. The next trial will be with Coleman fuel and a model turbine variable speed pump.
