Hi all,

Help Please!!!

Some of may know I sell outboard cables(not a shameless Plug)

I'm have some questions because one of my customers called me and said the cable is too long and seems a little stiffer than the original.

I haven't heard of this issue and want to correct the problem. There is nothing wrong with the cable, material wise.

I have K&B 3.5 and 7.5-11 and OS.

(1) Are there different outboards for k&b and OS, Are they all the same or different versions?

(2) what are the overall lengths to these cables?

(3) what could the cause be to have to shorten the cable? IE: type of collet or prop shaft assy.

Thanks in advance

Tim

Tim,

I have bought a few from Kris Flynn, Hyperformance, John Otto, I have had to grind/shave, reduce length on a few shafts to fit, it seem that they all vary depending on who the came from and or manafacturer. I do know that the ones I got from Kris for my K/B I had to reduce the length for it to fit, no big deal a little time with a grinder and it fit, It would be nice to not have to do this but after a few minutes it worked on boat applications.

I know this guys who has 'hand' made alot of OB shafts over the years with little, to no complaints. He has done alot of testing over the years to perfect these shafts too. You know, an outboard racer selling stuff he actually uses to other outboard enthusiasts.

He says that lengths to suit particular lowers are:

3.5

OS 128-130mm long

K&B, Proboat, Lawless 118-120mm long

Thunder Tiger 93-95mm long

All standard 7.5 lowers (as in un modified)

150-152mm (just under 6")

Some shafts do require 'tweaking' depending on motor (PTO shaft depth) and lower unit brand. A good way to make sure you shaft is not too long (which is why most break them too often) is the put shaft into lower unit and do up the prop shaft by hand (or with spanner) untill it just bottoms out on the lower unit (just nipped up with no pressure. You should be able to push your prop shaft in (ie 'squash' teflon washer) and when you release pressure it should not bouch back more than say the thicknes of paper. If it does then your shaft is probably too long, remove shaft and take 1mm off the length and try again.

He likes to ensure the shorter square end on the shaft goes into the prop shaft assembly. ESPECIALLY on the k&b lower units!
