Hello all, Just joined here and must say you all have a pretty cool site going here! and hoping you guys can help me with some questions I am going have a little on down the line with my project build. but before I got into that, heres a lilttle about myself.....I've been around R/C stuff my whole life..well ok 95% of it anyway. as me and my dad started in cars then got a couple boats and just played around with the boats. raced cars for alot of years *aswel as real race cars*...then when I was 13 i got a heli for my 13th B-day and since then me and my father have been into flying ever since. and have been to alot of championship fly-ins and what not. well im almost 27 now and still fly and getting back into boats.

Now to my project I am gettin ready to start here in the next week or so........for about the last week or so I have been looking for something along the lines of a "Cigarette racer" though wanting something BIG and different I searched and looked, and came up with nothing that I really wanted. So heres what I am starting, a twin G-62 gas powered 13' (foot) Cigarette boat. :) With that said my questions and needs are....

1) what would be a good drive system ? and prop size/system for this?

2) with these size engines I was thinking of cocking them 45 degrees facing each other to help with vibrations. Does anyone else see this as a problem(s)? (why i was thinking this is on our twin Ducted fan jets this is a problem)

3) I will making the hull out of lite ply/balsa wood and foam..anyone think of anything else I should use to build my hull out of?

Thanks for reading...

John :)

PS for those that maynot know what it is im building heres a Pic. enjoy

Welcome!!

You would be better off staying away from the lite-ply, & use regular ply. Boats take much more punishment that a airplane does, & you want as much strength as possible. I don't know much about the gas engines, but if you use isolation mounts for your engines, you shouldn't have vibration problems. As far as drive system, I would use 1/4" flex shafts. I don't have any idea about what props to use, sorry. Defiantly use a dual rudder system. As far as the strut, you could use stinger type. Have you done much research into running hardware yet?

I hope I could answer some of you questions.

thanks for the welcomes and feed back.

Ron thank you for showing me those links! they are very helpful and ballantine hobbies has alot of what im looking for as engines and they also have a drive system for my plans also! so thank you very much B)

wswatzell, yeah i ment to say reg. like 1/4" ply and and propbably something a bit bigger for the back of the hull and for the engine formers.

Welcome,

You might want to look at the Quickdraw engines. I think they have the same hp but smaller. Also I think 6ft might be a max. 13ft is going to be a tug. I say this from a little experience. I put twin Zenoahs in two different style catamarans for the Navy. They were about 6ft long and probably ran about 40mph.

On a side note. The military is really utilizing our LHS. The two boats mentioned seemed able to carry a large amount of explosives. However they never would say what the actual use would be. The LHS is building 20 E-Maxx's that have a flat plate on top to which "something" will be attached. The "something" is in addition to any guidence systems. I wonder what that could be? <_< I also saw a little of a twin cylinder Zenoah powered heli that required the ability to carry a 45lb "payload". All kinds of cool James Bond stuff!

Thanks for the tips! I have been thinking about it being a bit of a tug boat myself. so i was thinking about doing a 10 foot prototype also or do just that and forget the 13 footer or both..who knows at this point? I know im pretty much on my own when it comes to a "racer" this size. so to me (anyway) it really doesnt matter how fast it is.....unless people wanted to start doing something with this size i am the only one (that i can tell) that has this style racer....but then again I could always upgrade the engines later or down size in the hull......plus i could convert a 3W engine also if needed....we'll see how things pan out. :(

Thats pretty cool you got to make those for the military! B) do you have any pics?
