ML Dumas build

Planning on a 1985 U-1 Miller American using a ml boat works framing kit and the actual Dumas kit for cowling and wings and other miscellaneous parts decals etc I have the Dumas kit new in box and a ml boat works frame kit on its way this will be a slow over the winter build I'm really going to put my nose to the grindstone and try to make this the best I've ever done I usually Rush my boats together but I'm going to take my time

You mite want to get the-paint drawing from David Newton to look at to help you with your build. The vents on the Dumas kit are not slanted like the real boat.

Has to be closer than the real thing compared to an RC boat company Cowl, which has no venting at all just has the exterior shape

A word of advice, use the Dumas parts either for or to make templates instead of using them to make the cowl and tails from. That way, you can make extra parts from better materials so you can replace anything that's damaged beyond repair. I would also recommend you get decals from one of the sources here in the forum since Dumas has discontinued the kit and accessories for it. It will also let you sell the kit later on as complete rather than taking a major loss for it being incomplete.

Would anyone have any pictures of the transom of a '85 Miller American I don't know if it's a recessed or if it's just flush with the rear

I have the opposite problem... I have trouble making myself work on fiberglass! And, I have a lot of it to do! So far I've come up with over four different ways to repair a hole in a sponson. Now at the point where I'm about to do SOMETING , right or wrong!
I HATE WORKING ON FIBERGLASS!!!!!

Ken, I have that same problem; AVERSION TO FIBERGLASS!!!!!
That is actually one of the main reasons I prefer to work with wood. There's that and the fact that, for me anyway, it's easier to work with wood

Finally got a satisfactory front portion of the cowl shaped and formed epoxy drying now it's removable

While you have the deck still open, I would suggest you support both ends of the dowel that run into both sponson. This will help with twisting of the pickle forks. A frame that runs from the bulkhead in front and behind would add a ton of strength to the boat. Easy to do now.

Yes I do plan to brace those sponson up more I did put a square sheet for the right rear sponson transom to beef up turn fin side

Christmas is over with my kids have all went back to Minneapolis, well three of them, time to put my nose back to the grindstone and get this boat built for springtime
