I am curious how people measure their props.

Especially interested in the new measurement guages like the one that Steve Wood and the one that Speedmaster manufacture.

People talk about buying props that have XXX pitch and YYY cup. Where are these measurements taken?

70% out from the center of the hub? 75% , 80% etc.

Where is the cup measured.

I think that we need to be talking apples to apples and it would be nice if people would give their method and we can standardize.

Especially interested in what Mark Sholand and Andy Brown are doing since they are the ones producing props for the masses.

I used a Hughey Pitch Guage for years and came up with a neat spreadsheet that does all the calcs automatically. I will modify that spreadsheet so that it will work with the newer Hughey Style Guages that Steve and Speedmaster sell as soon as we can develop a standard.

far as i know both mark and andy use my gauge. it comes with a chart(waterproof)for every 1/4 degree

Marty,

I would have to measure one of your propellers to tell you if

it is the same as Steve's gauge. I also have a new gauge that

measures every 1/8 of a degree. :D

Our cup is right on the trailing edge @ .7 radi and then we

go up about a 1/4" up into the blade to find our Center Of

Blade pitch. Give me a call I am not going to type

it all out. I only use the first step on my gauge 1/8" I

believe.

Hi Marty,

I am STILL using the spreadsheet you made way back,it works fine.

Mark:

If you use 70%, that is the same that I have always used. You also say to the trailing edge. OK, how big a sweep do you use on the 70% measurement.

Please expand on the cup part, it is totally seperate from the 70% pitch.

No need to measure one of my props, I am just looking for the process so that everyone can use the same parameters and talk apples to apples.

With Steves or Speedmasters device, it can be set in an unlimited number of ways and the sweep can be set using a number of thicknesses. That is why I want to standardize some.

The cup part, you need to clarify so that I can understand in simple terms how you set the guage and where you measure.

I agree, GREAT topic.

Steve:

Your guage is top quality. I will be making a spreadsheet that you are welcome to point people to that will automate the measurements and also a spreadsheet that has a place for all the documentation of each prop. I have been using that for years. Ron, Jr I think has also.

Very good idea... When people quote pitch numbers it is useless to me because I have NO clue on where on the blade and etc. Unless the prop is in my hands and the person is there to explain I am lost.
